Bringing Together the World's Leading Researchers in Theoretical Computer Science
关于我们
The Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing is the world's leading venue for collaborative research in theoretical computer science. Established in 2012 with a grant from the Simons Foundation, the Institute is housed in Calvin Lab, a dedicated building on the UC Berkeley campus. The Simons Institute brings together the world's leading researchers in theoretical computer science and related fields, as well as the next generation of outstanding young scholars, to explore deep unsolved problems about the nature and limits of computation. Mission The Institute's mission is to promote fundamental research on the foundations of computer science, as well as to expand the horizons of the field by exploring other scientific disciplines through a computational lens. This second and distinctive goal is motivated by the fact that natural phenomena in many scientific fields (including physics, biology, neuroscience, game theory, and economics), or the models those fields have developed for these phenomena, are intrinsically computational in nature — from chemical processes in living cells to the self-organizing behavior of complex systems of interacting particles, to mechanisms governing human evolution and the collective behavior of competing agents in an economy. The insights gained from such explorations often reflect back to the theory of computation, opening new directions and advancing our understanding of fundamental issues in complexity theory and algorithms. Complementary to its research mission, the Institute works to enhance public understanding of algorithmic science, in recognition of the increasing prominence of algorithms in every aspect of human life and society. We're delighted to announce that we'll be partnering with Canadian research consortium IVADO to enhance and expand the Spring 2025 research program, Special Year on Large Language Models and Transformers, Part II (LLM2). The partnership will support the addition of a third thematic workshop within the LLM2 program, organized by Yoshua Bengio, Siva Reddy, and other collaborators. It will also enable long-term program participation by 8–10 researchers and students from Canadian universities. https://lnkd.in/gB_gruUi

The search for the next director of the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing opened on October 1, 2024. Shafi Goldwasser, who held the Institute directorship from 2018 to 2024, stepped down at the end of August. Venkat Guruswami, one of the Institute's two senior scientists, is serving as interim director until the next director is appointed. We seek a visionary leader who will identify important theoretical topics, oversee the Institute's staffing and operations, lead the Institute’s fundraising efforts, and connect with the international theoretical computer science community to attract leaders and participants for our programs. Reporting to UC Berkeley's Vice Chancellor for Research, the next Institute director will also be appointed to a tenured full professorship on campus. Upon completion of their tenure as Institute Director, which is for an initial period of five years with the possibility of renewal, the position will revert to that of a regular professor. The candidate’s designated home department is open, but should be in a field closely related to the theory of computing. Applications are due November 11.?The full position description and application instructions are?here: https://lnkd.in/g7NS7FER
