You know those moments in your career when you’re just extremely grateful? Grateful for the job you have. Grateful for the work you get to do. But more importantly, grateful for the people you get to do it with. Last week I had one of those moments. ? Our entire Marketing department came together to reflect on some of the challenges and successes of the past year. The day was far from ordinary. It was a Ted Talk-style format, with over 100 slides and exactly 1 chart. People talked about the road-blocks and setbacks they experienced, personal and professional, and each person left us with?a?lesson to share with the group. ? We were honored to welcome Colby Swettberg (they/them), CEO of Silver Lining Mentoring, along with a mentor, mentee, and alum. Their insights into the experiences of youth in foster care and the crucial role of committed mentoring relationships were both powerful and emotional. I left feeling inspired, motivated, and profoundly thankful. Recently, a group of mentees, mentors and SLM staff gathered together on a sunny day at the Quincy Quarries for an outdoor rock climbing team building event. Together, our group built trust, communication skills, boundaries, and self awareness through group games and challenges. We then got some lessons on rock climbing safety and gear before our mentors and mentees took to the climbing walls! We got to see matches overcoming their nerves, trying something new, and experiencing success of accomplishing a climb in a beautiful and unique outdoor setting. There were shouts of encouragement from the folks watching on the ground! Big thank you to the staff at Waypoint Adventures for facilitating this engaging, challenging, and exciting workshop and shout out to all the matches who gave this activity a try!

Welcome to the team, Wanda Rodriguez! Wanda recently joined Silver Lining Mentoring as Program Manager. She has spent seven years in non-profit. Her journey began at Chica Project, where she was introduced to the administrative and development aspect of non-profit work. Wanda would later transition into programming at Big Sister Association of Greater Boston, as a Spanish-Speaking Match Support Specialist and later Manager of Our Big Futures (OBF) programming. She took part in creating, implementing, and launching OBF, supporting 14-24 year olds with achieving sustainable financial independence via career development and/or college success. Wanda is passionate about the importance and impact a meaningful mentoring relationship can have on a youth, and is invested in supporting and empowering teens and young adults to step into leadership roles and spaces. Leah Harrigan and Alex Parkes on SLM’s Program Team are excited to join an international community of practice with The Kempe Center and University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus at the 2024 International Virtual Conference: A Call to Action to Change Child Welfare. The goal for this session is to motivate and inspire change makers worldwide to develop a culture of belonging and psychological safety within their organizations.
