As a psychologist, educator, and mother to a child on the spectrum, I'm thrilled to see more accurate portrayals of people with Asperger's and other differences in media. That's why I'm excited to share about "Aspie" author, actor, advocate, and comedian Michael McCreary's upcoming events at Saddleback College and the Irvine IMPROV on Saturday, March 23rd. Michael's book, "Funny, You Don't Look Autistic," is a must-read, and his presentations and performances have captivated audiences at Big Tech companies, advocacy groups, and on television (including Netflix's “Ginny and Georgia,” Season 2). The best part? Michael's fun wit makes it okay to laugh about life AND autism spectrum disorders by sharing the humor in his own experiences with autism. This is a family-friendly event for all ages, and I encourage you to spread the word to anyone who may be interested or can relate. For more information and tickets, please visit the link below. Let's support this talented individual and continue to promote accurate and positive representation of neurodivergent individuals in media. https://lnkd.in/gUcxc3NM #neurodiversity #orangecounty

Our friend Grayson who is an aspiring musician and visually impaired lost his home, all his belongings, and all his instruments (including drum pads, guitars, etc) in the EATON fire. Please help if you can. He has been an inspiration for us at Silver Lining Circle! https://lnkd.in/gnGBNu4r

Even if you are not directly affected by the Greater Los Angeles wildfires, you may experience a sense of distress or vulnerability by living close by or watching the destruction unfold. These tips from psychologists can help. #wildfire #losangeles #mentalhealth

Yes! Start small- and it would be good to add a) stay consistent and b) be extremely specific and concrete in creating each goal b) celebrate the small wins periodically to reinforce them c) get back up on that horse if you lose your consistency, and d) scaffold new positive changes upon them once they are “habit”! This applies to all of us, including parents and children -alike!
By making your resolutions realistic, you are more likely to keep them throughout the year and incorporate healthy behavior into your everyday life. Excellent article about studies of how “rejection” impacts brain activity.
Friend bailed last minute? Didn’t land the dream job? Passed over for promotion? Ghosted and left on read? Don't worry, rejection is more like redirection. A USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences study reveals how the brain processes rejection and acceptance, mapping pathways that guide trust and connection. By understanding these circuits, researchers aim to redefine mental health treatments. ??

The pandemic highlighted the disparities in education for neurodivergent children! This week I share Sarah Dixon's story, and her journey to gain recognition and support for her children whilst also building a community of parents sharing the challenge of supporting and advocating for their children. Sarah is now the director of Accessible Learning Foundation (ALF), after a fascinating journey, from Law, to property, to community :O) Hope you enjoy this weeks newsletter and I welcome your experiences and thoughts on the importance of a community, when it feels like nobody else understands or shares your experiences. #Neurodiversity #NeurodiversityWithTheoSmith #Neuroinclusion #Community
