Selectively bred fast-growing trees: increased CO2 sequestration & resilience to utilise low-quality soils for timber

关于我们

At Silvanus Forestry, we specialize in industrial wood production plantations and increased carbon sequestration through the utilization of low quality, marginal soils in areas with low precipitation. Our selectively bred 'Turbo' and 'Turbo Obelisk' Black Locust grows uniquely fast developing a straight stem with more than a doubled CO2 sequestration capacity compared to traditional Robinia pseudoacacia. Currently, we have about 70 hectares of planted and maintained forest in Hungary on the privately owned lands of the Silvanus Group. Our varieties are planted and are thriving globally in a variety of environmental conditions by our partners and customers. Our mission is to provide a solution for climate change adaptation and mitigation by applying climate-smart plantation forestry in challenging conditions.

??Timber production is threatened by climate change and environmental impacts, such as drought, lowering water table and invasive pests and diseases. ??Climate resilience, environmental and financial sustainability are key aspects of our mission. ??Our selectively bred 'Turbo Obelisk' Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) variety is a fast-growing crop for high quality industrial timber productionm, that will result in durable carbon sequestration in challenging environmental environmental condition, where other traditional tree species will not be able to thrive in the future. ??See the video for comparison between the 'Turbo Obelisk' variety and the common Black Locust. #blacklocust?#turboobelisk?#agroforestry?#sustainableforestry?#forestry?#timber?#carbonremoval?#climate?#climateresilience?#climatemitigation

  • ??Pruning?Robinia pseudoacacia Turbo Obelisk plantations not only enhances wood quality but also supports long-term carbon sequestration by producing durable, high-value timber for industrial use. ???Why Prune? - Improve Wood Quality:?Minimize defects like knots for industrial-grade timber. - Maximize Long-term Carbon Storage:?Durable, defect-free industrial wood stores carbon effectively over time. - Promote Healthy Growth:?Corrects branching issues for straighter, monopodial stems. ?? When to Prune? - Optimal Period:?January to early spring. - Avoid:?Green pruning to prevent fungal infections. #sustainableforestry #forestry #timber #pruning #carbonremoval #climate #climateresilience #climatemitigation #carbon #carbonsequestration #blacklocust #turboRobinia #Robinia #RobiniaPseudoacacia #honeyproduction #biodiversity

?? Leveraging wetlands and flooded areas are also key efforts for land rehabilitation. Through our selectively bred Salix alba 'Corvinus', known for its rapid growth and straight stems, we are able to restore these environments effectively. Additionally, we are addressing the challenges posed by low-quality marginal soils with low precipitation by planting our Turbo and Turbo Obelisk Robinia pseudoacacia varieties. ???? We engaged in discussions around these matters at the International Conference on Nature-based Solutions to Combat Climate Change in Antalya, Türkiye. ?? Márton Németh had the opportunity to present these solutions alongside experts like ?smail Belen, Chairman of United Nations Forum on Forests, who can be seen on the photos with a 7-year-old slice of a Salix alba 'Corvinus' and a 14-year-old slice from a Turbo Obelisk Robinia. Grateful to be part of this important dialogue with many esteemed colleagues from the Turkic region and beyond.

New York State is currently restricting commercial tree planting. Planting black locust is unrestricted in Pennsylvania, and is semi-restricted in New York State. Nonetheless, it is listed as a commercial hardwood in New York. The tree is undisputedly native to the Appalachian and Ozark mountains, and we have to make a thorough inquiry as to whether a tree can be labeled as "invasive" if it is ubiquitous throughout the continent, particularly in regions that are not separated by water or mountain ranges. There is a massive disconnect between bureaucratic nativism and reality here. Apples originated in Kazakhstan, peaches are from China, and potatoes are from South America. Yet a tree from Pittsburg is exotic? Unacceptable. https://lnkd.in/eyhpXpsX
