??Recap?? Silicon Flatirons Startup Showcase This week, I had the chance to attend the Silicon Flatirons Center for Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship Startup Variety Show, where five entrepreneurs shared their ventures. Each is solving real, tangible problems - some right in front of us, others on the horizon. My biggest takeaways from each: ????? Patty Ferreira – Silvis Materials (Defossilizing Glue) The Silvis team is working to create non-toxic, fossil-free glue. Imagine remodeling your kitchen without breathing in chemicals for weeks. Glue is everywhere, and innovation in this massive industry is long overdue. But what really struck me? Despite being in a non-tech field, Patty had just used AI that morning for cost analysis - proof that tech will touch everything. ???? Charles Msilanga – Lipr Inc (Fintech for Africa) Lipr is transforming digital payments in Africa, an essential need in a region where traditional banking can be non-existant. Charles' slides were top-notch ??. Having been to Kenya and Tanzania, I’ve seen firsthand how payment systems differ globally. It’s eye-opening to be reminded that the 95% of the globe outside the USA has problems and solutions we don’t necessarily think about. ???? Curtis Purrington, Ph.D. – Austere Environmental (Soil Remediation) Take contaminated soil, separate out the petroleum, return clean dirt to the ground and diesel back to the customer. Simple, brilliant. Curtis originally worked on extracting water from lunar soil (which is drier than concrete). Now, his tech is nearly ready for deployment at drill sites, turning hazardous waste into usable resources. ???? Jake Riel – Brick Popper ($400K in Sales from a $10 Product) A sophomore in college selling a Lego accessory that’s already done $400K in sales. Jake is obsessed with product-market fit, and now he’s shifting from e-commerce to retail. I’m curious to see if he expands beyond his niche - sometimes, the best businesses come from solving hyper-focused problems. ???? Eva Y. – FLARI (Laser Breathalyzer for Biomedical Applications) A Nobel Prize-winning technology spun out of CU Boulder’s JILA could soon be used for early detection of lung cancer (and promising but not yet, Alzheimer’s and other diseases) all through a laser breathalyzer. I have family members affected by lung cancer, so this one hit home. As our population ages, 50 million people will enter the Alzheimer’s risk range. We can’t rely solely on caregiving; we need early detection and scalable solutions. ?????? Shoutout to Brad Bernthal and Julie Penner for moderating and asking keenly insightful questions. ??Why This Matters These companies are tackling challenges from glue to fintech to space tech - all with real-world impact. This is why we invest in bold, ambitious ideas. Excited to see where you take these ventures next! #entrepreneurship #startups #SiliconFlatirons #innovation #AI #healthtech #fintech #productmarketfit

"Space is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is." — Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Yes, indeed, space is big. But, as discussed at the conclusion of the Flagship Conference, it is also a resource with a rising number of conflicts. Space is starting to feel crowded. Flagship Conference attendees grabbed box lunches and gathered for an optional Space Policy Luncheon panel session moderated by Silicon Flatirons Spectrum Policy Initiative Co-director and CU Boulder Research Professor, Dr. Keith Gremban. This engaging discussion highlighted challenges and opportunities of space as a resource. Panelists: ?? Dr. Angel Abbud-Madrid – Director, Space Resources Program, Colorado School of Mines ?? Sophie Galleher – National Security Associate, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati ?? Dr. Al Gasiewski – Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Colorado Boulder ?? Dr. Siamak Hesar – CEO, Kayhan Space Key Takeaways: ?? The regulatory environment in space is like the 19th Century west insofar as legal systems conflict, are absent, or fail to function. International agreements are urgently needed to ensure fair and sustainable use. ?? Space laws must address scientific mission protection, radio frequency management, and orbital debris mitigation. ?? Establishing a global regulatory framework is complex but essential—requiring international collaboration. ?? The loss of access to space would have severe consequences for science, industry, and daily life. The panel closed with a call to action: Science and industry must do a better job of communicating why space matters—and why regulation is critical for its sustainable future. ??
