关于我们

Our Mission: Silicon Valley Cybersecurity Institute (SVCSI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, aims to investigate, develop, and promote technical excellence and the best security practices for dependable and secure systems and applications. With industry partners, we leverage our local communities including high schools, colleges, and universities in designing various cybersecurity activities for future cybersecurity workforce development. In particular, our center focuses on underrepresented groups to increase their interest in cybersecurity as a career. UNderrepresented groups in cyberSECurity (UNiSEC) include, and are not limited to women, persons with disabilities, and minority groups—blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and American Indians or Alaska Natives.

Should I give up on Facebook? So many of my friends do not have accounts on Facebook for various reasons: * Waste of time * Manipulative *Exploitive and more... I have truly enjoyed Facebook as a way to connect with extended family and "old" friends and follow legitimate businesses that I support. Those have been my primary reasons for using Facebook. Therefore, I was exceptionally surprised when my Facebook account was suspended this week for reasons that Facebook has not yet shared with me. I have appealed this suspension but have renewed interest in jettisoning this social application given this unexpectedly forced opportunity to reevaluate and, perhaps, capture the time that fellow naysayers suggest I will save. Note: I use Facebook's multi-factor authentication (hence, my suspension is not due to my own authentication failures), nor do I attempt in any way to hide/obfuscate my true identity. I neither host nor post anything derogatory towards any religion, race, or political entities. Nothing illegal, nothing pornographic. I think that the suspension is a mistake as my research seems to suggest that Facebook occasionally makes. Nevertheless, I ask: Is this an opportunity to jettison my ties to Facebook? If Facebook can make such a mistake (amongst many other "things" I have likely previously overlooked), is it worth the effort to appeal to and/or appease to Facebook? I am not so sure. What do YOU think?

  • The summer research camp, designed for both undergraduate and high school students, was finished after the final poster day on August 16, 2024. Our students all inspired peers' research outcomes while working hard at the new interdisciplinary science building (ISB) at SJSU. Four high school students remotely researched with a faculty (Jun & Sara) at WPI or WVU and their graduate students. All the participants engaged in active research, collaborating with peers on their projects. Our undergraduate campers had an exciting visit to Google’s headquarters and met an engineer to discuss the interview process. The story concludes with a lively celebration at the camp during poster day, where students proudly present their research achievements to friends, family, and guests. With excitement, students reflect on their personal and academic growth throughout the summer. Motivated by their experiences and the faculty's guidance, they leave the camp more determined than ever to pursue their dreams in cybersecurity. This summer camp is supported by NSF REU program (Dr. Younghee Park (PI) & Dr. Fabio (co-PI) and SVCSI summer camp program. Thank you so much all for your support and hard work!

Last week, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote at a joint conference event between SVCC 2024, HackTheon Sejong, and the Korea Institute of Information Security. It was my first time being on an international stage and speaking about my work in an official capacity. To be completely honest, it was nerve-wracking leading up to that moment -- from figuring out what I could talk about, navigating internal approval processes, to preparing for the actual talk almost 6,000 miles away from home base -- but I did it. Coming out on the other side of this experience, it was wonderful, and I am so glad that I did it :) In terms of content, I shared my Adventures in Security, Privacy, and Risk spanning almost two decades, sampling some of the “big” problems tackled across industry sectors and layers of the tech and organizational stack. Taking a reflective approach, I tracked major platform shifts and drew out some inspiring themes from a multi-disciplinary career journey. And of course, since everything these days includes AI, I offered a tiny thought-provoking bit on how I am revising my mental models for this major platform shift -- opinions entirely my own. Zooming out, the greater point of this post is to motivate anyone who fears public speaking or thinks countless times about telling their story: do it. As human beings, we sometimes underestimate the value of our journey, the sum total of our individual experiences and perspectives. But when that story reaches even one "random" person in the crowd, who lights up and gets inspired, or realizes that they too are on a meaningful journey... that is the sweet reward. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of many kind souls. I'll take a moment to plug SVCSI and celebrate our 5th continuous year of organizing an annual conference, creating a platform for under-represented practitioners across academia and industry, and growing our community in a fun and meaningful way!
