Our latest study in Environmental Science & Technology shows how California's right-to-know law Prop 65, by promoting greater transparency around harmful chemicals in products, can shift markets toward safer products. "In the absence of federal regulations, these findings underscore the important role that states, especially large ones like California, can play in protecting the broader public from chemicals that could harm their health.” -- Dr. Jennifer Ohayon. The leading scientific research organization dedicated to uncovering the environmental causes of breast cancer.
关于我们
About The only scientific research organization specifically dedicated to breast cancer prevention. Company Overview Silent Spring is a nonprofit research organization working to identify and break the links between chemicals in our everyday environments and women’s health, especially breast cancer. Our groundbreaking studies have opened new doors to the health risks associated with toxics where we live and work – areas that have largely been ignored in cancer research. The only scientific research organization dedicated to breast cancer prevention, Silent Spring Institute is staffed and led by researchers dedicated to science that serves the public interest. We partner with physicians, public health and community advocates, and other scientists to propel progress in breast cancer prevention. Description The Institute’s research agenda is defined by these priorities: * Focus on the environment, an under-studied area that can lead to the discovery of preventable causes of cancer, particularly in communities with higher risk; * Make women’s health, especially breast cancer, a central rather than peripheral research priority; * Support innovation, including new research methods and pilot studies to test new hypotheses; * Foster multidisciplinary teams of researchers to integrate their strengths; * Foster true collaboration among scientists, physicians, and community members. Silent Spring Institute began in 1994, after members of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition called for a scientifically sound investigation into elevated breast cancer rates on Cape Cod. They founded “a laboratory of their own” and named it Silent Spring Institute in tribute to Rachel Carson, whose landmark book, Silent Spring, launched the modern environmental movement. Carson died of breast cancer just two years after the book was published. Be part of the movement https://silentspring.org/.

Behind the Scenes at Silent Spring: Meet Staff Scientist Emily Heckel! Emily is passionate about community-engaged research and helping people understand how science impacts their lives. She currently supports Silent Spring’s work on PFAS contaminants in drinking water. Emily is the study coordinator for the Massachusetts PFAS & Your Health Study, which is part of a CDC-funded national study investigating the effects of PFAS in drinking water on human health. She helped enroll nearly 800 adults and children in Hyannis and Ayer to have their blood tested for PFAS and then reported back to each participant about their test results. Emily received an MPH in Global Environmental Sustainability and Health and a certificate in Risk Sciences and Public Policy from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. We are lucky to have her! #environmentalhealth?#PFAS?#drinkingwater?#safedrinkingwater?#environmentaljustice?#publichealth?#cancerprevention

The dismantling of federal environmental regulations and protections that we're witnessing today will lead to more pollution, more cancers, and more deaths. When we stand up for the environment, we stand up for health, we stand up for prevention! ?? #standupforscience?#environmentalhealth?#cancerprevention?#prevention?#environment

Science is under attack. Research funding is being terminated. The impact of widespread cuts across federal agencies and targeted attacks on research institutions like Columbia are putting people at risk. Public health research keeps people healthy and saves lives. The impact is real. Funding for our important research at Silent Spring Institute is being cut, making it very difficult to conduct not-for-profit prevention research. I'm Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) of a major NIH grant that has gotten caught up in all of this. Cuts like these will halt important research, which will be felt for years to come.

Thank you WE ACT for Environmental Justice for your leadership - we cannot reduce chronic diseases without standing strong for #environment justice - we have to increase not cancel grants and research dedicating to improving health like we do at Silent Spring Institute
This week, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Lee Zeldin?announced?a massive, immoral, and deadly rollback of public health and environmental protections, violating his obligations and the mission of the EPA. This move, along with Zeldin’s directive?to close all environmental justice offices and continue illegal funding freezes,?is in full abandonment of the?needs, wants, and lives of people across the country, and is overt environmental racism. Read and share WE ACT's statement, and why we must stand strong for #EnvironmentalJustice >> https://lnkd.in/e8FAxryD

“There are a lot of products we’re using every day that contain harmful chemicals. So it’s about being more aware and intentional about what we’re putting on our bodies and exposing ourselves to.” - Silent Spring Research Scientist Elissia Franklin, PhD https://lnkd.in/eH3FQRm2

On April 2, Silent Spring research scientist Dr. Robin Dodson will talk about how?our homes – from the materials used to build them to the furnishing and products we bring into them – impact our health and wellbeing. She’ll be joined by Amanda Reddy, executive director of the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) to discuss actionable strategies for reducing harmful indoor pollutants, and how science can drive systemic change to create healthier living environments for everyone. A new report from the nonprofit United for Medical Research shows that funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supported 407,782 jobs and generated $94.58 billion in new economic activity nationwide in FY24 — that’s $2.56 in economic activity for every $1 of research funding. These benefits reach all 50 states. That’s why proposed cuts to the NIH budget would have a devastating impact on America’s health, economy, and global leadership. https://lnkd.in/dEzvVTK

This move will undoubtedly result in more cancer-causing chemicals entering our air and our water, and comes at a time when voters overwhelming say the government should be doing more--not less--to protect the public from toxic chemicals that contribute to cancer and so many chronic health conditions. https://lnkd.in/ernQiaxr
