Happy Monday!!?? IT'S MICKEY MOUSES' 96TH BIRTHDAY! Author | C. Knighten Photo | Public Domain Today marks the premier of “Steamboat Willy” on November 18, 1928....the day that fans worldwide officially recognize as Mickey Mouse’s Birthday!! The fortunate thing for Mickey, is while he may get older.....he doesn't show a single sign of aging in his 96 years!! Thank heavens for Walt Disney and his amazing vision for all the magic they have brought to us for all these years!! HISTORY OF MICKEY MOUSE: Mickey could have been a rabbit???? What?? Yes, while he has served as the ionic figure for the Disney brand all these years, he almost didn't exist. In fact, he was only created as a replacement for Walt Disney’s original successful creation, Oswald the Rabbit. Oswald was created by the Disney studio for a film producer and distributor through Universal Studios. The producer was Charles Mintz. Oswald was a great success, and with confidence, Disney asked MIntz to increase his studio's budget. Mintz had other plans, and countered asking Disney to take a 20% cut??With so much success from Oswald, Disney asked Mintz to increase the studio’s budget, but instead Mintz demanded Walt take a 20 percent cut. Disney, refused and while he finished his contract with Universal and walked away. With a large part of his crew captured by the contract with Universal, it was small crew that stepped up to create Mickey. Walt Disney and two animators, Ub Iwerks and Les Clark, started from scratch to create a new vision. Disney learned a hard lesson from the experience with Universal....never again would anyone own the rights to the characters he created! A real mouse at his Laugh-O-Gram Studio, in Kansas City, MO, was Disneys' inspiration for Moritmer Mouse. Yes, Mortimer was his original name, until Disney's wife Lillian, convinced him to change it to Mickey!! There were three attempts to launch Mickey as a new character. The first, was in May 14, 1928, Mickey appeared in a test screening of the cartoon short “Plane Crazy”, , which failed, Then a second Mickey short called “The Gallopin’ Gaucho”, was produced and also suffered from a lack of distributor interest. Three strikes....nope, they hit paydirt with their third try. Intended to be a parody of Buster Keaton's "Steamboat Bill, Jr." Mickey premiered on November 18, 1928 in New York, co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and “Steamboat Willy”, became Mickey's debut!! GREAT WAYS TO CELEBRATE MICKEY MOUSE'S 96TH BIRTHDAY!! ??Watch Steamboat Willy! Or any other Disney film. If you have the time, watch how the animation has progressed over the years by watching films from different eras. ??Throw your own Party!! Happy Veterans Day!! ?? Author | C. Knighten Observed every year on November 11th, we celebrate this day to Thank all those who have served our country to protect our Freedoms and uphold our Constitution! HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY: Originally recognized as Armistice Day, Veterans Day was first observed by President Woodrow Wilson, a year after the end of World War I. It's purpose....honoring the sacrifice and bravery of the fallen during the Great War! In 1926, Congress adopted a resolution requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue an annual proclamation on November 11, declaring Armistice Day as a legal holiday. In 1945, Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans rather than only those who died in World War I. He led a delegation to meet with General Dwight Eisenhower, who fully supported their idea! Weeks then organized the first Veterans Day celebration in 1945 right here in Alabama, and continued to do so until he passed in 1985. In 1982, President Reagan honored him with the Presidential Citizenship Medal. Later, Elizabeth Dole named Weeks, the ‘Father of Veterans Day’! In 1954, the U.S. Representative from Emporia, Kansas, Ed Rees, presented a bill to establish the holiday to Congress. Eisenhower, who was the sitting president and also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954. Only eight and a half years after Raymond Weeks celebrated the first Veterans Day. With two additional wars behind us, World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of veterans’ service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word ‘Armistice’ and inserting the word ‘Veterans.’ With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. First received by Congressman Rees, the National Veterans Award was also created in 1954. He received the award for his contributions in making Veterans Day a federal holiday. Though the holiday is currently and was originally celebrated on November 11, the day was moved to the fourth Monday of October in 1971 due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Finally, on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law that returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. In 2001, on August 4, the United States Senate passed Resolution 143, designating the week of November 11 through November 17, as National Veterans Awareness Week. The resolution provided for educational efforts focuses on elementary......click here to finish this post and learn great ways to celebrate and support our veterans locally: https://lnkd.in/ej9KGi4Y #signsbytomorrow #banners #schools #wayfinding #huntsville #madison
