Have you heard of Aimé Leon Dore? They started as a small streetwear brand out of Queens, NY. Now they're the clothing of choice for NBA mega stars like LeBron James. It's a two hour wait to shop in their store in SoHo. The latest season's merchandise sells out instantly and goes for 2x the price on secondary markets. How does this happen for a retailer, especially one rooted in a specific geography? My take: the experience. ALD *mastered* the ecommerce experience, playing into loyalty, exclusive inventory, personalized promotions, and fully understanding their customers. ?? Early adopters and frequent shoppers were tagged as VIPs in their systems. These VIPs were given early access to the latest seasonal merchandise. ?? Special collaborations (often with New Balance) were only available to brand loyalists with online accounts. ?? Every shopper had an online account with a log of past purchases - a trophy wall so to speak. ??♂? If someone new wanted to become "part of the club", he or she had to settle for the less popular inventory. The flywheel builds. If you're a small or medium-sized retailer, no doubt you have additional challenges to compete with the big players. But the online experience you provide can be the great equalizer. Really know your customers, deliver a consistent experience, and make loyalty a no brainer.
