Viola Mitchell Turner – A Leader of Black Wall Street ???? As we continue celebrating Women’s History Month, we recognize Viola Mitchell Turner (1900–1988), a groundbreaking investor and business leader. Turner was a million-dollar investor on Black Wall Street and the first woman Vice President of NC Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1924, she started as secretary to the company’s treasurer in Durham, NC. She was later entrusted with managing NC Mutual's investment portfolio, where her advice helped the company earn over a million dollars. In 1957, Turner became Treasurer and eventually Vice President, making significant contributions to both the company and the Black business community. ?? • Honoring Women Who Shaped Finance & Business ????? This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the trailblazing women who broke barriers in finance and business, paving the way for future generations. Hetty Green (1834–1916) was one of the wealthiest women in America during the Gilded Age. A fiercely independent and savvy investor, Green was often harshly dubbed the “Witch of Wall Street” due to her all-black attire and notoriously frugal lifestyle. Her buy low, sell high investing strategy, along with investments in real estate, government bonds, and railroad stocks, earned her millions. She even bailed out the City of New York during the Panic of 1907, taking her payment from the city in bonds. While her frugality and eccentric personality earned her a somewhat negative reputation at the time, she is now remembered as one of the most successful and influential investors of the late 19th Century. ?? Inspired by Hetty Green’s investment strategies? Students nationwide are learning the fundamentals of investing through The Stock Market Game! Fearless girls!?? The Real World Finance Club, sponsored by the Boyce Center, visited the New York Stock Exchange and JPMorganChase in NYC last week where they got to be on the floor of the #NYSE, witness the closing bell and hear from alumnae Catherine "Kit" Jackson, CFA '83, Angele Seriki '07, Kate Schroeder O'Neill '93 and Amie Boyce James '70 about their careers in finance. Students have been learning about the stock exchange through SIFMA Foundation's The Stock Market Game, an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students in the world of #investing and personal #finance. A huge thank you to all who made this trip possible including our faculty and staff, alumnae, a generous donor and #SIFMAFoundation! Read more about the trip here: https://tr.ee/Q6V9tB

As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize the trailblazers who broke barriers in finance, investing, and banking—paving the way for a more inclusive financial industry. Their contributions continue to inspire future generations to build wealth, invest wisely, and lead in the financial world. Here are three Black pioneers who made a lasting impact: ??Maggie Lena Walker (1864–1934) – The first Black woman to charter and serve as president of a bank in the U.S., Walker founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, empowering Black communities with financial independence and economic opportunity. ??Reginald F. Lewis (1942–1993) – A visionary businessman, Lewis led the first Black-owned billion-dollar company when he acquired TLC Beatrice International Holdings, demonstrating the power of strategic investing and corporate leadership. ??Joseph Searles III (1942–2017) – In 1970, Searles made history as the first Black member and floor trader of the New York Stock Exchange, breaking barriers on Wall Street and opening doors for more diverse participation in the financial markets. At the SIFMA Foundation, we are committed to empowering all students with the knowledge and skills to navigate the financial markets. By learning from these pioneers, today’s young investors can build their own legacies in finance. Photo credits: Maggie Lena Walker- National Park Service, Reginald F.
