As a civil engineer in the construction industry, I know that contingency plans are essential to minimize impacts to the public when things go sideways. While questions are important to the process, sometimes the "cautious critics" can take things too far. We can contingency plan until we're blue in the face and still not capture everything. At some point, we have to have faith in the team and their experience to handle challenges and let them build something. It may not be perfect, but that's okay. When leading the reconstruction and reconfiguration of the entrance road into DTW from I94, my team and I had numerous meetings with engineers and stakeholders. This project had huge impacts on public safety, maintenance, landside, employees, and mostly our customers. To keep a positive attitude, I brought a cup to meetings with the phrase, "It's going to be really nice when it's all done." This became our catchphrase and a reminder that momentary pain leads to a great outcome. If you've entered DTW from I94 anytime since 2018, I think you'll agree with me that the results speak for themselves. I am not a structural engineer, but this is one concrete pour I was excited to see! Why, you might ask, keep scrolling: 1. The end result is a slopped bottom tank with drainage to help operations and maintenance staff clean the tank when not in service. We design for the end user. 2. It's great progress towards operation of a Hazen and Sawyer designed full scale Densified BNR pilot that will set the design criteria for future capacity expansion at Noman Cole PCP. 3. It demonstrates the benefits of collaboration between Engineer, Construction Manager and Contractor during construction, the Owner is getting the best quality product. 4. I get to witness young engineers Kirsten Horn, PE and Devin Reeder grow their careers in the #waterindustry. In short it was a great day to be "in the field".#workforwater.
