This is a clear calling for human intelligence with artificial intelligence.
AI rewrote Neil Armstrong's quote, "That's one small step for AI, one giant leap for mankind.” or should it be vice versa? Let us know in the comments.
Get your Sharpe out and mark your calendars! Effective January 1, 2025, the Illinois Supreme Court has issued a new policy permitting judges, lawyers, self-represented litigants, court clerks, and other court officials to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their professional activities.
"The use of AI by lawyers, judges, self-represented litigants, clerks and other court officials "may be expected, should not be discouraged, and is authorized provided it complies with legal and ethical standards," the court said in a policy issued on Wednesday that takes effect Jan. 1."
Key Takeaways:
• Conditional Authorization: This policy allows the use of AI if it follows legal and ethical standards. It emphasizes the importance of due process, equal protection, and access to justice.
• No Mandatory Disclosure: Attorneys are not required to disclose AI usage in court filings. However, they remain accountable for the final content and must ensure all AI-generated material is thoroughly reviewed and factually sound. Here is where human intelligence comes into play.
• Ethical Considerations: The policy underscores the necessity for AI tools to safeguard sensitive information, addressing concerns about authenticity, accuracy, bias, and the integrity of legal documents and judicial decisions.
• Ongoing Evaluation: The Illinois Supreme Court understands that AI technology is constantly changing. The court will regularly review and update the policy to meet new challenges.
Illinois courts will "be vigilant against AI technologies that jeopardize due process, equal protection, or access to justice," the Illinois Supreme Court said.
