The new Art Studio Lab (ASL) at California State University-Sacramento is now open, offering an inspiring, state-of-the-art space for students and faculty that will champion equitable arts education across the region. In close collaboration with Sacramento State’s Art Department, HGA designed a contemporary, dynamic lab to replace the Art Department’s former warehouse location. The ASL features modern instructional spaces, studios for painting, drawing, and sculpture, wood and metal shops, and dedicated graduate studios. At the heart of the lab is a central hub for exhibitions and, a sculpture yard creates a public space for installations and gatherings, inviting community engagement and encouraging collaboration across art disciplines. With a smart orientation, spacious production yard, and sustainable design features, the ASL enhances visibility and accessibility on the southern edge of Sacramento State’s campus. Thank you to HGA’s partners, Otto Construction, Siegfried, The Engineering Enterprise, and Jensen Hughes, for helping to make this vision a reality.
