The new San Francisco Botanical Garden Nursery & Maintenance Facility in Golden Gate Park consolidates the Garden’s greenhouse, support spaces and growing grounds into one area – improving efficiency and workflow by separating public areas from back-of-house operations, while still allowing visitors a view of the buildings as they explore the Garden. At the heart of the facility is the all-electric greenhouse, one of the first in California. The all-electric strategy helped the project achieve a 70% EUI reduction from baseline. The 28’ x 120’ greenhouse positioned parallel to a pre-engineered, metal-framed Headhouse creates a protected outdoor work yard where staff toting plants and tools safely come and go. Site improvements include bioretention basins and permeable crushed stone paths to manage rainwater. These new professional photos by @CesarRubioPhotography capture how this donor-funded project advances the Botanical Garden’s mission to connect people to plants, the planet, and each other! In the midst of a very busy September, here’s a moment of zen featuring Cloud Hall at Green Gulch Farm at Muir Beach (part of the San Francisco Zen Center). Converted from a stable and barn into student housing in the early 1970s, Cloud Hall had undergone many ad hoc alterations over the years. Siegel & Strain designed a much-needed renovation that improved thermal comfort, universal access, life safety, energy efficiency, and acoustic privacy. A new two-story addition to Cloud Hall—Still Water Hall—provides conference space on the ground floor with student housing above, and a universal access entry bridge connects Still Water Hall to the dining hall and other common facilities. Site improvements were carefully considered to improve wayfinding and access, provide privacy for the Zen community living at the site, and fit sensitively into Green Gulch’s forested canyon. September is Transit Month in the Bay Area, and we've been enjoying the great videos BART has been posting, including this cool look into the Transbay Tube (celebrating 50 years of?service!) One of Siegel & Strain Architects' employee benefits is a generous commuter subsidy for all of the public transit systems that serve our office in Emeryville. AC Transit, BART, Amtrak and the San Francisco Bay Ferry: we love them all! #BayArea #TransitMonth #sustainability #transportation #publictransit
The Transbay Tube turned 50 this week so we got riders a gift: We're bringing you inside the Tube for a look at some of the amazing infrastructure that gets hundreds of thousands of people where they need to go every single day. Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/gtzcyVY7
