Censorship by HRSA fails to suppress the true scientific data. HRSA/CMS censorship attempts failed to hide the fatal flaws in the final RULE. Experts agree that HRSA/CMS censorship is clear suppression of science. The assault on peer-reviewed science in organ donation and transplant reached a frightening new low with the censorship by the Health Resources and Services Administration of important research scheduled for presentation at the American Transplant Congress. Distinguished national expert and researcher Jesse Schold, PhD, MStat, MEd, Professor of Surgery, Associate Vice Chair of Policy and Outcome, Transplant Surgery, University of Colorado noted, “What occurred at the American Transplant Congress was a suppression of science by HRSA.?Organ donation and transplantation is a critical function in the health care system and current CMS metrics models are neither robust nor sophisticated.” See the censored research on our site: https://lnkd.in/dpQvgqgG Coordination between OPO's and transplant centers saves lives. The comprehensive and informative Johns Hopkins University webinar, Organ Procurement in the US: Navigating Challenges and Shaping the Future, featured members who worked on the seminal NASEM study on donation and transplant. SID&T joins them in urging Congress and CMS to adopt its findings. Read our summary of the proceedings: https://lnkd.in/eYUikwyu Coordination between OPO's and transplant centers saves lives. Because CMS’s Final Rule is certain to produce inaccurate rankings, any attempt by CMS to decertify OPOs based on this metric will likely result in lengthy appeals in federal court and successful litigation to overturn CMS’ action against OPOs. Given the certainty of failure, Science in Donation & Transplant is renewing its call for CMS to stop ignoring the scientific evidence. Andrew Cameron, Professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine Dept. of Transplant Surgery, stated. “it’s choppy waters to criticize the system, because we are predicated on the public’s trust in terms of donations. If we are inflammatory in our critique of the system, we run the risk of fracturing public trust in a way that will do us a disservice….” “As we work through those complicated issues, we need to maintain the public’s trust and try to help them understand how we can all work together towards increased organ utilization. We have to be very careful about steering away from the notion that there are malignant forces out there that work against transplantation.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYUikwyu Coordination between OPO's and transplant centers saves lives. The analysis reports that in 2021, 54% of OPOs are incorrectly ranked in lower tiers due to the faulty CMS 95th percentile confidence interval methodology compared to the O-to-E and met Methodology with error rates of 43% in 2020 and 24% in 2019. The analysis also demonstrates that in 2021, the CMS methodology ranked 42% of OPOs in Tier 3, requiring automatic decertification, while the O-to-E identifies only 12% of OPOs in Tier 3. The recent Johns Hopkins University webinar provided a refreshing dose of reality, expert peer-reviewed science, and a roadmap for consensus around one set of facts..." Key Webinar takeaways: 1. Registrations for the organ transplant waiting list are up, but contrary to popular belief, the number of patients on the waiting list has been on a downward decline for 10 years. For every kidney patient removed from the waiting list in 2024 due to death or poor health, 3.25 kidney transplants were performed. 2. Over the past 5 years, nationwide organ donation rates have outpaced transplantation rates. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYUikwyu Coordination between OPO's and transplant centers saves lives. An additional area of research that should be pursued is updating previously published research that shows potentially significant (OPO) mis-ranking based on other statistical weaknesses of the CMS methodology, which are compounded by the 95th percentile methodology.
