Water in your feed spinners is usually a very bad sign. Here on Mowi Scotland’s Loch Duich site however, it would be worrisome not to see fountains spirting from every pen. Gavin, an engineer with Mowi, and in collaboration with Smir Group, is developing a first-of-its-kind water spinner system that promises to catapult feeding to new heights regarding efficiency and longevity. This system can even feed all twelve pens simultaneously, a feat often out of reach for most farm sites. James spent the day with Iman Ismail and his team at Loch Duich, where they discussed all things feed spinners. ??

The Sonde! A water quality data-gathering powerhouse, all packed into a submerged monitor–by YSI, a Xylem brand. Alistair Docherty, an Environmental Field Scientist at Mowi Scotland, is working on a long-term water quality monitoring project at an inland loch in the Scottish Highlands. This multi-year effort is helping farmers and the regulators with whom they work closely to better understand and mitigate environmental impact, while also promoting healthier fish. James had a great (albeit, wet) day on the loch with the team learning all about water quality!

The density of salmon farm stocking is strangely a controversial topic. But when you go speak to the experts, it's often dismissed due to it's highly regulated nature. Well, we thought it might be useful to dive at the somewhat dry subject of maximum tonnage biomass and stocking density in a way that might be more captivating to a broader audience. A number of analogies could be drawn to describe large volumes, but we went with Boeing 737 Max's just for the fun of it. James put this footage together from his visit to Mowi Scotland's Cheese Bay farm site in North Uist.

Cameron Jones' salmon farm in Stulaigh is doing something unusual for Scotland – something that’s already seen some success in places like Chile and Canada. He and his team at Mowi Scotland have trialed a bubble curtain around the site’s 14 pens. Their goal? To reduce the exposure of the fish to harmful micro jellyfish. Because of the farm’s unique geography, tides can channel jellyfish, like Muggiaea, directly toward the pens. Cameron’s trialing LOW O2? bubble curtains at Stulaigh, and CanadianPond.ca Products Ltd. at another site in Portnalong. This is our first time creating a video with someone like Cameron – James thought it might be good for you to hear directly from the experts we often reference in our videos. Let us know what you think, because we’d love to create more content together!

How is salmon welfare maintained without medicinal treatments, even during regional biological challenges? Freshwater treatments are one of several available options for fish health managers. They’ve been around for a while, but the technology is improving at breathtaking speeds! Today, we’re visiting a Mowi Scotland farm on the Isle of Skye for a scheduled freshwater treatment after the identification of adult female sea lice and AGD (Amoebic Gill Disease). Both are problematic, but fortunately, both can be treated with freshwater well-boats if they’re equipped with the right mechanisms. Flatsetsund Engineering AS pressure delousers are aboard these Intership AS well-boats, and James was thrilled to finally see them in action! James is currently on an extended trip throughout Skye and Uist with Cameron Jones, Area Manager of 14 farm sites in the region. They’re only just getting started, and much more will soon be coming from this adventure out West!

Myths and fears about the color of farm-raised salmon are surging online. One of the best ways we can combat this misinformation is by looking at its source. In this case, it's the misleading labeling requirements present throughout much of the U.S.'s food systems. Join James as he debunks "Color Added" and recommends some social media sources to turn to for advice in navigating the complex regulatory and labeling environment. ?? Shown here are videos we recorded from a number of our trips this year. Cyanotech Corporation's Haematococcus pluvialis cultivation in Hawaii, Mowi Canada East's Vancouver Island farms (hand-feeding), Skretting North America's New Brunswick feed mill (astaxanthin), and Mowi Scotland's feed mill & Caol Mor sea pens on the Isle of Skye. As we visit more sites and learn about the intricacies of the global aquaculture sector, we can produce more robust videos like this thanks to the bank of footage and knowledge we have to draw upon.

How is Scottish aquaculture adopting modern technologies? Well, in A LOT of ways. More than James could possibly cover in one video. But today, we're visiting one operation that's exploring remote feeding in the Scottish Highlands as a way to push innovation forward faster. At the Glen Nevis Business Park in Fort William, a team of operators is trialing Mowi Scotland's latest remote feeding system. Once the kinks in this setup are ironed out, it's likely to see more widespread adoption, allowing farm managers to dedicate more time to livestock welfare and on-site improvements. Plus, who doesn't want a fish app? ??

Today, we observed a wrasse transfer at Loch Linnhe! Wrasse, native to Scottish waters, are one of the few species of cleaner fish used by the finfish aquaculture sector to combat sea lice. Just a small number of wrasse can make a significant impact, particularly towards the end of summer when sea lice pose the greatest challenge. James accompanied Mowi Scotland for this quick transfer today, just before the rain set in.

James posted a sneak-peak from the ongoing Loch Etive transfers last week while aboard the Inter Viking. Today, we're thrilled to share the fully fledged video from it all! Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) is not a new concept, nor is it unfamiliar in salmon farming. However, IMTA has yet to achieve widespread adoption in the salmon industry—at least, not yet. We made this video in response to the numerous questions we receive from consumers on the subject. Understandably so, as IMTA makes perfect sense in theory and can be compared to intercropping or polyculture systems for those more familiar with land-based agriculture. While implementing IMTA in salmon farms presents challenges, it remains an approach worth exploring. Once the ideal species are identified, it will likely gain broader acceptance. At least we think so! See our post originally on James' channels: TikTok: https://lnkd.in/e3cSeYuc Instagram: https://lnkd.in/eSGdAHbY
