The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary is now the first marine preserve in California managed with Indigenous collaboration. The 4,543-square-mile sanctuary off California's Central Coast will ban oil drilling and provide protections for a region rich in cultural resources. Congratulations to SMW partner Heather Minner for joining the Board of Directors for the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. The Council works to plan, promote, and sustain a connected hiking, cycling, and equestrian trail on the ridgelines around San Francisco Bay. Together with its partners, the Council has dedicated over 400 trail miles, linking people, parks, and open space for today and future generations.? Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed AB 2501, a key bill that will help cities like San Diego better prepare for catastrophic storms. The California Senate has passed the Room to Roam Act (Assembly Bill 1889), which requires cities and counties to protect wildlife connectivity in their land-use plans. This bill aims to minimize harm to wildlife movement by guiding local officials to incorporate wildlife-friendly measures, such as specific fencing and lighting, into development plans.
