Last semester I was honored to be chosen as a member of the 2024 Ohio State Homecoming Court, which has allowed me to volunteer as campus events, interact with my fellow Buckeyes, and represent the university! One of the things that I get to do as a Homecoming Court member is fundraise for a cause of my choice. I am happy to announce that I will be raising money for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research ! Growing up I have always been incredibly close with my mom, Leslie. She is my best friend, my biggest cheerleader and my shoulder to cry on. Throughout my college career, my mom has always been there to support me and love me through good times and bad times; she has truly been my rock through it all! That is why at the beginning of my 4th year at Ohio State when I got the call she had been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, my world literally turned upside down. The strongest woman that I knew was now struggling with a debilitating disease and fighting for her life every single day through her mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Watching my mom's battle with breast cancer was one of the hardest experiences of my life, but it also opened my eyes and showed me just how important cancer treatment and research is, especially for cancer survivors and their families. I spent countless days and nights in the hospital by my mom's side, witnessing firsthand just how hard this journey was for her, and without the incredible care she received at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, she might not be here today. The dedication of the healthcare professionals at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center not only saved my mom’s life, but also gave us hope during some of our darkest days. The doctors, nurses and support staff took care of her physical health, but they also made sure her mental and emotional well-being were looked after, which played a huge role in her healing process. It is because of the heroes at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center that I can finally say my mom is in FULL REMISSION! The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research supports crucial breast cancer research, including advancements in genetics, technology and patient care, which are essential in the fight against this disease. My goal is to raise as much as possible to support further research and patient care at the center, so no other family has to endure the uncertainty and fear that mine went through. Together, we can make strides toward a world where breast cancer is a thing of the past!
