Desiree, a former patient in orthopedic hand clinic, is now a practicing registered nurse in Michigan. She was excited to visit her childhood hospital recently and reunite with nurse Jen Lipumano, RN, who was on the hand team when Desiree was a patient. Congratulations to our surgical services team for being officially recognized as a Center of Excellence in Surgical Safety: Smoke Evacuation by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses with their AORN Go Clear Award?. Receiving this national award represents the entire team's commitment to patient and staff safety. Surgical smoke may form during many procedures when energy generating devices are used to stop bleeding or cut tissue in the operating room. Experts caution it may contain hazardous chemicals.? Angela Carey, director of surgical services said improving safety and obtaining the award was a multistep process that involved a four-month audit, continuing education for all OR staff, and obtaining four smoke evacuators for the operating rooms.?

Sydney, a patient at Shriners Children’s Chicago, recently made a wonderful donation alongside her classmates from River Forest! Over the past few months, they organized an Activity Drive filled with coloring books, colored pencils, games, and more—bringing creativity and joy to our patients. After her appointment, Sydney gathered with members of her craniofacial team to personally deliver the donation. We are so grateful for her kindness and dedication to giving back! Shriners Children's Chicago hosted more than 130 physicians, clinicians, data scientists, engineers, and researchers from across the country at the "Shriners Children's State of Research: Special Emphasis on Muscle and Bone Health" The 7th annual conference included more than 30 presentations on topics in muscle and bone health, including early research into a compound that could lead to the first oral treatment for OI. Some other talks included comparing pain control measures and several surgical techniques in orthopedics, and the fascinating muscle response in children missing an upper limb, that scientists may one day use to develop even better prosthetics. There were several Chicago staff presenters. Three members of the board of trustees for Shriners Children's, who are also members of the research committee, attended the two-day conference. Congratulations to Sahar Hassani, administrative director of research and medical staff, and Dr. Gupta, our chief of staff, on a successful event.
