?? Breaking News from Shreveport Aquarium! ?? A truly extraordinary event has occurred: a swell shark pup egg casing has hatched in our care—without any male sharks in its habitat. This rare phenomenon could be the result of parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction, or delayed fertilization, where eggs are fertilized years after mating. Our team discovered the egg approximately eight months ago and has carefully monitored its development ever since. On January 3, 2025, the pup successfully hatched with assistance from our expert aquarists. Affectionately named Yoko, after the Chumash word for shark 'onyoko', this resilient little shark is thriving behind the scenes. While Yoko isn’t yet on exhibit, we’re thrilled to share updates about this groundbreaking discovery and an upcoming DNA analysis that will reveal how this incredible event happened. “This situation is incredible and shows the resilience of this species. It really proves that life... uh... finds a way,” said Greg Barrick, Curator of Live Animals.
