Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is fundamental for Large Language Model (LLM) applications. However, long context lengths can degrade performance. Splitting long documents into chunks can lead to information loss as these chunks are treated independently and lack context from each other. To address this limitation, we recently implemented a self-attention mechanism to enhance the embeddings of document chunks, aiming to improve retrieval accuracy. We observed an accuracy improvement from 54% to 65% in selecting the correct chunk. The dataset used was Google Natural Questions (https://lnkd.in/g2_QVRms). The embeddings model utilized was Alibaba-NLP/gte-large-en-v1.5. We will open-source the code and full architecture details soon. #LLM #RAG #Embeddings #ContextualEmbeddings
