The mission of Shoals Marine Laboratory is to provide outstanding experiential, place-based education and to support innovative research programs focused on understanding and sustaining the marine environment. Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is dedicated to undergraduate education and research in marine science. Since 1966, SML has offered undergraduate students a unique opportunity to study marine science in the field with exceptional faculty from institutions throughout North America. Learning at SML is grounded in truly "hands-on" educational experiences. SML courses and internships provide rigorous training in a diversity of marine subjects and prepares students for careers in the fields of marine and environmental science and sustainability. All SML programs are infused with in our ethos of responsible natural resource use and management, valuing scientific and community collaboration, and public service. Welcome back! Sara Morris, a well-respected leader dedicated to student academic experiences?and a passionate ornithologist, has been selected as the new executive director for the Shoals Marine Laboratory. Morris has served as the longtime director for the Appledore Island Migration Station, the lab’s bird banding program that runs each spring and autumn and has deep roots as a graduate student, lecturer and volunteer at Shoals. “Since May 1990 when I first took the R/V Kingsbury to Appledore Island as a Cornell graduate student, the Shoals Marine Lab has been an integral part of my professional and personal identity,” Morris says. “The community and learning environment that SML creates is unique and impactful, and I am so excited to have the opportunity to support and continue the Shoals tradition as the next executive director.” Shoals Marine Laboratory is a remote field station located on Appledore Island, Maine, and is jointly operated by the University of New Hampshire and Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It is the largest field station in the U.S. that focuses on undergraduates, offering them a unique opportunity to live on the island and study its marine habitats, as well as the island’s plants and wildlife. Morris will start her new role Feb.?3, 2024.
