Supportive Housing Network of New York

This week, we welcomed Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal, Assemblymember Stefani L. Zinerman, and representatives from the offices of Senator Roxanne Persaud, Senator Julia Salazar, and Assemblymembers Phara Souffrant Forrest, Latrice Walker, Nikki Lucas, Monique Chandler-Waterman, and Andrew Hevesi at one of our oldest supportive housing buildings in Brooklyn. Alongside our tenants and representatives from The Supportive Housing Network of New York, we advocated to increase funding for the New York State Supportive Housing Program (#NYSSHP), which has been funded at virtually the same rate for nearly 40 years! #SupportiveHousing is vital for the safety and stability of domestic violence survivors and their families, but NYSSHP, on which thousands of survivors rely, is shockingly underfunded. New Yorkers deserve better.

Congratulations to The Doe Fund and Robert Sanborn Development on the opening of new affordable & supportive housing residence, The Plains. This new energy-efficiency residence is creating 98 new apartments — 49 supportive for formerly homeless individuals and 49 affordable — in the Wakefield neighborhood of the North Bronx. "This residence affirms the commitment to community, now more than ever we have to be reminded about community," said Executive Vice President John McDonald. Congratulations to all the public and private partners involved in this great endeavor!

Today we gathered, along with eleven New York State advocacy groups, at the state capitol to share the critical importance of a 7.8% investment in Human Services. The need for human services is only continuing to grow and we need the NYS budget to reflect this. A 7.8% investment will help reduce treatment gaps, eliminate disparities, and improve access to services. The Network alongside partner affordable housing organizations published the below statement regarding City Council bill?Intro. 910. The Network and its partners does not oppose the minimum wage set forth in Intro 910, but it has other aspects of the legislation that we believe will have a significant and adverse impact on the City’s ability to meet its goal of creating 15,000 supportive housing units by 2030. In addition to the what is outlined in the statement, the Network is especially concerned about the penalties and compliance standards for presumed non-compliance would likely discourage smaller nonprofits from developing – not because they intend to break the law – but because of the cost of compliance with strict record-keeping, reporting, and the risks of penalties. This could narrow the development field to larger, for-profit developers who typically focus less on affordable and supportive housing. This shift would impact of MWBEs (Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises) as well, many of whom play a role in nonprofit housing development. With smaller developers priced out by bureaucracy, the diversity and accessibility of housing projects in the city could be compromised, affecting both tenants and the fabric of our communities.
