Brandon L. traveled to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab from Michigan after experiencing a work-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) that required an emergency craniectomy. The craniectomy left part of his skull exposed and Brandon was fitted to wear a helmet for head protection. During physical and occupational therapy at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, he was easy to spot because his helmet was adorned with Viking horns — a symbol of how he tapped into his strength, sense of humor and “inner Viking” to guide his recovery. Throughout his intensive rehabilitation, Brandon kept his focus on his family — wanting to return to his home life and role as a dad, the “keeper of bees and maker of the great grilled cheese.” Read Brandon’s full story in recognition of TBI Awareness Month: bit.ly/3FnzbTH #TBIawareness #BrainInjuryRecovery #TraumaticBrainInjury #RehabilitationJourney #TBIAwarenessMonth #BrainInjuryAwarenessMonth
关于我们
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), is the global leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation for adults and children with the most severe, complex conditions — from traumatic brain and spinal cord injury to stroke, amputation and cancer-related impairment. The quality of our care and research has led to the designation of “No. 1 Rehabilitation Hospital in America” by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991. Upon opening in March 2017, our $550 million, 1.2-million-square-foot research hospital became the first-ever “translational” hospital in which clinicians, scientists, innovators and technologists work together in the same space, surrounding patients, discovering new approaches and applying (or “translating”) research real time. This unique model enables patients to have 24/7 access to the brightest minds, the latest research and the best opportunity for recovery. Interested in joining our team? By doing so, you will be part of our life-changing Mission and Vision. You’ll work in a truly inclusive environment where diversity and equity are championed through words and actions. You’ll contribute to an innovative culture that is second to none, one that embraces curiosity, discovery and compassion. You’ll play a role in something that’s never been done before as we integrate science and clinical care to help patients achieve better, faster outcomes — as we Advance Human Ability, together. Join us in thanking Bob F., a “compassionate warrior” who just retired as a peer mentor in the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Henry B. Betts, MD, LIFE Center. During a decade of volunteer service, Bob supported patients who — like him — had received a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). He shared his lived experiences to help patients envision a high quality of life with an LVAD — and to give them hope for their own rehabilitation journeys. Thank you, Bob, you’ll be missed! Nick A. lost the ability to communicate at age 17 after a severe brain injury. However, 24 years later, he has found his voice thanks to assistive technology. His speech-language pathologist and occupational therapist at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab designed a customized device that Nick uses to express discomfort, hunger or a desire for a specific activity like listening to music — all by nodding his head to activate a switch mounted on the back of his wheelchair headrest. As we recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month, read Nick’s full story to learn how assistive technology enables communication after injury: bit.ly/3F2JZqm #BrainInjuryAwareness #AssistiveTechnology #SpeechTherapy #CommunicationAids #BrainInjurySupport #EmpowermentThroughTech
