Reciprocal Tariffs on the Horizon: What It Means for Global Trade President Trump has signed a memorandum directing officials to evaluate reciprocal tariffs, aiming to align U.S. duties with those imposed by other countries. The directive calls for a 180-day review to outline a country-specific strategy for implementation. While no specific nations were targeted, broader trade and taxation policies—including the Value-Added Tax (VAT)—are under scrutiny, as the administration considers them non-tariff barriers to market competitiveness. This move follows a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, a temporary pause on Mexico and Canada tariffs after border security negotiations, and new 25% duties on steel and aluminum imports set to take effect in March. The administration has also moved to end duty-free entry for low-value e-commerce imports under the de minimis rule change, but the policy has since been retracted while implementation challenges are worked through. With trade policies in flux, staying ahead is key.
