What happens when community organizations work together to get kids excited about kindergarten? 5000 backpacks full of education tools are put together - one for every incoming Guilford County Schools kindergartener! Here’s the magic that made this happen: shift_ed reached out to partners like Ready for School, Ready for Life, Guilford County Partnership for Children (GCPC) and Scholastic to get educational tools to put in each backpack and they delivered! Over 100 volunteers helped stuff the backpacks and shift_ed team members delivered them to schools across the district this last week. These youngest students don’t need to wait for the first day of school to start learning. The tools in the backpacks help them start learning today! Thank you to all of our community partners and donors who made this possible. Together, we are boldly accelerating student potential!

On February 27th, over 80 Guilford County community leaders came together to talk about how we can align our work to better serve kids. These are busy people - GCS administrators, nonprofit EDs, elected officials, faith leaders, business leaders & others. Collectively, they dedicated a full day to look at how we've always done things and to explore how we can work better, more efficiently together. shift_ed is honored to lead this work as a part of our Aligning Resources for Collective ImpACT initiative. It's clear that Guilford County is leading the way in many areas, but we still have work to do if we want to make sure every child has the possibility to reach their full potential. To understand this work, its critical to look at some of the pieces of the puzzle, including: ?? 21% of Guilford County's children live in poverty, compared to 18% across NC and 14% across the nation. ?? Only 49% of Guilford County adults earn a family sustaining wage, as opposed to 58% across NC and 56% across the nation. ?? 66% of GCS students are classified as economically disadvantaged. ?? Nearly 70% of young children in Guilford County have working parents, but only 30% are enrolled in licensed care, impacting kindergarten readiness. We often ask our educators to solve some the toughest issues that we as a society struggle with - poverty, food insecurity, access to health care, mental health support, college readiness and more. Educators can't do this critical work alone. It will take all of us working together to ensure that Guilford County's children and our community thrives. So join us. Round 2 is underway! GCS High Schools are in the midst of March Madness, but this event is all about securing scholarship funds rather than slam dunks. Graduating seniors, take a bold step towards your future by applying for the shift_ed scholarship, and help increase the percentage of completed applications for your school!

Huge shoutout to the amazing @gcschoolsnc counselors and admin teams! Two of our shift_ed Leadership staff had the pleasure of visiting Kearns Academy, Ragsdale High, Grimsley High, Southern Guilford, Northwest Guilford, and Southwest Guilford to connect with students about @seoscholarsnyc and @seoscholarsnc. As a small token of appreciation, we delivered donuts to the counselors who help make these opportunities possible!
