Just two years ago, Hurricane Ian devastated our community. My family and I lived through it, evacuating at the last moment while my father, a police officer, stayed behind to serve. We were lucky and our home was salvageable, but this was not the case for many. Some lost their homes, and others lost their lives. Now, as another Category 4 hurricane approaches Fort Myers and Tampa, my heart aches. We've just witnessed the destruction of Hurricane Helene in Tampa, leaving friends without homes. We know the fear, the uncertainty, and the tough decisions our community faces. To our pharmacy partners who can't leave, to the first responders and healthcare providers who must stay behind - including my dad - we stand with you. We understand that for many, evacuation isn't an option. While we can't stop the storm, we at ShiftRx are committed to supporting our Florida pharmacy community in the best way we know how. We know this gesture can't undo the potential damage or ease all your worries. But we hope it can provide some relief as you focus on what truly matters - the safety of your staff, your families, and your communities. To those facing the storm, please stay safe. Don’t Choke … New York has officially banned Gag Clauses!!!???? Governor Hochul's signing of the "anti-gag clause" bill is a transformative move for healthcare transparency in New York. But what exactly is a gag clause? ?? A gag clause is a contractual provision that restricts pharmacists from informing patients when a drug might be cheaper without using insurance. These clauses often appear in agreements between pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), limiting transparency and leading to higher costs for patients. PBMs have plagued the industry with their confusing, complex business model that they created to conceal their corrupt practices. This game of smoke and mirrors helps them maintain their chokehold on our healthcare system. By banning these clauses, New York empowers pharmacists to provide cost-effective options, enhancing patient empowerment and affordability! ??? Jack Blake and Hugh Gardiner represented ShiftRx yesterday at Justworks + One Medical 2nd Annual ATX Paddle Battle Eastside Paddle Club with plans to donate the proceedings to St. David's Foundation. Unfortunately, things don’t always go to plan and our team was out-paddled but, Autumn-Kyoko Cushman and Andrew Roberge were great cheerleaders. This was a valiant effort, for a fantastic charity event. Huge shoutout to Angie Neas for inviting the ShiftRx team to come out and paddle for a cause!

2275 pharmacies have been forced to close their doors in 2024. This is not just a pharmacy issue. This is a nationwide epidemic. Each day we toss around numbers in an attempt to capture the sheer magnitude of the corruption plaguing our industry. But it’s visuals like this that slap you in the face. They force you to pay attention. Benjamin Jolley and his peers spent ~40 hours investigating the number of pharmacy closures so far this year. Their findings paint a terrifying picture: * 1139 chain closures of large chain pharmacies * 1136 Closures of independents and small to mid-sized chains * 2300 pharmacies’ worth of employees have been laid off. Most pharmacies employ about 10 people, so that’s about 23,000 pharmacy staff laid off. * ~ 1100 entrepreneurs have had their dreams of pharmacy ownership crushed just this year To emphasize how alarming this is, on average EACH DAY since January 1, 2024: * ~5 pharmacy owner-operators have closed their businesses permanently * ~5 chain pharmacy Pharmacists-in-Charge have had their stores closed * ~11 neighborhoods lost their pharmacy * ~110 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have been laid off Independent pharmacy closures have created pharmacy deserts, restricting access to prescriptions for ~16 million Americans. Many of Ben’s solutions are wedged in government policy. “Medicaid, Medicare, ACA, the FEHBP, state public employee plans, and TRICARE together account for somewhere north of 70% of a typical pharmacy’s revenue.“ With razor thin margins, every dollar counts. Independent pharmacy owners are burnt-out, short staffed, and often undervalued. They work tirelessly to keep their doors open to keep our communities healthy. It’s a selfless profession. And — with the direction the industry is heading — not an attractive one. We are often asked why we choose to focus our efforts in Pharmacy when there are countless of other professions that would yield us a much higher return. The answer is simple — they need help. No, it’s not a glamorous industry. But the work these people do is invaluable and they deserve to have the support of their community. I would like to close on a quote from Ben. “My profession as it exists, exists primarily at the behest of and mercy of the folks in Washington DC and in the various State Capitols. The policy choices that have been made over the last 20+ years are why my profession is struggling and dying. We need help. I hope that we’ll be able to make it so that when an entrepreneurial person gets a doctorate, saves some money, opens a pharmacy to serve their community, and the community chooses to support that pharmacy, that pharmacy thrives.” It is time to wake up and face reality. It is our responsibility to rewrite the narrative.
