I’m proud to be Chairman of one of the most exciting, growing defense tech firms in the world! Shield AI is redefining autonomous AI with software and hardware, protecting the lives of warfighters and civilians in every region of the planet. I can’t imagine a more noble mission. Our teammates are making it happen.

Yesterday, Shield AI announced our fundraise at a $5.3B valuation. In 2015, Silicon Valley had turned its back on the defense sector. For Shield AI, every investor meeting was a "no". The theme, "great team, great technology, but we don't and won't do defense." At one point, we were offered a $5M investment with a condition, "change your mission". Low on funds, and without prospects Brandon Tseng Andrew Reiter and I gathered together to assess our options. Recognizing if we didn't take the money, we'd likely be gone within a year, Andrew spoke for the group when he said, "I'd rather go out business trying to make mission impact, than take this money." So, we declined our only option and got back to work. Now 2016, almost a year later, we had our last shot at finding an investor to believe in us our and mission. A plane ride felt-like a bank-breaking expense, so I bought a bus ticket and took an 8-hour ride from San Diego to Oakland, to meet with David Frankel from Founders Collective. A "no" would mean the end of Shield. I stayed late at dinner with him. In what felt like miracle, he gave us a "yes". Full of excitement and mindful of clock, I hurried to the bus station. It was late, around 10PM, and I remember running in a full sprint after my Mega Bus, the last one of the night, as it pulled out of the station. I missed it. But, it didn't matter. I snapped a picture of myself and sent it to Brandon and Andrew - we could build Shield AI. We went on to receive our first term sheet for $800,000. Shivon Zilis, David Frankel, and Satya Patel joined together to lead our seed round - believing that the world needed - and Brandon, Andrew and I could build - a great company fully committed to the mission to "protect service members and civilians with intelligent systems." In every fundraise, I have been humbled and grateful to have the backing our investors who believe in this team and this mission. And, I have been honored to have the backing of teammates, who do extraordinary work and put a smile on my face - even when you miss your bus.
