We’re looking forward to our upcoming pitch event on October 1st! These events are curated to bring in a handful of businesses our members express interest in. One of the things that makes us - US, is a path to real dealmaking access and investment influence. All members at She's Independent Investments have a voice and say and we truly democratize the dealmaking process starting with which companies present to our group. We’re women-first which means we lean into women- (and diverse-) owned ventures, recognizing the massive private funding gaps that exist today. But we aren’t restricted in terms of our capital deployment. Our members can choose how they want to allocate and we’re just here to help make it happen and tool folks with expertise and community along the way. We love seeing great businesses delivering value to women no matter the ownership! This upcoming pitch event happens to showcase a number of businesses owned by men. It's always a great time connecting at Denver Startup Week! Thanks again for including us, Malte Witt. We really enjoyed the conversation about Balancing Control and Capital in Early-Stage Startups with Kirsten Suddath and Niko Skievaski. Malte asked how Natalie has noticed female-funded companies navigate control/growth dynamics when it comes to capital formation. She replied that she didn't love the question given how tough capital access is for so many women-owned businesses out there. So many women we connect with who run private, venture-backable businesses share that access to capital feels out of reach - so their focus is on filling the round. Feedback we hear from them regularly: 1. Rooms of men don't often understand their product or customer. (We do! Be in touch…) 2. Men don't always believe in them and push them to other women investors. 3. Men don't give them the shot. (Underrepresented founders often position differently, speaking to what they've done, not positioning with lofty goals baked into the present.) We hate to pull in gender, but we have to call it out. Underrepresented folks looking for funding… 1. Know the basic financing framework. Where are you? What can you expect? What can you ask for? What should you avoid? 2. Seek investors you trust who will believe in and support you! Seek advice, knowledge, and quality introductions. (It sounds like Niko has some great ideas here!) 3. Be strategic in your outreach to target funds and investment groups aligned with your business and goals. (We’d love to hear from you!) 4. Be smart about your cap table, how much ownership you give away, and plan for the future! 5. Be relentless! We know you're resilient. She's Independent Investments so enjoyed co-hosting a Women's Mastermind session with Colorado BioScience Association (CSBA) last week. We dove into angel investing concepts - from foundational to advanced - alongside touching on an investor mindset. How do you navigate to full confidence to step into angel? JUST START! Investing will change your mindset and investing alongside others is a great way to navigate into new skills. We were thrilled to welcome some of our investment members with healthcare backgrounds including our COO Arieann DeFazio, Idong Essiet-Gibson, PhD, PMP, Simone Otenaike, and Lily Bragg who shared their experiences as angels along with what motivates them to be an angel and how a member-led investment group works.
