The Sherman Heights Community Center promotes educational, health, personal development, and cultural programs that enhance the well-being of individuals and families in our communities. The community we serve is predominantly Mexican- American with many families facing economic hardship. This community has preserved itself by using art as an avenue towards empowerment & collaboration. For many years the community has supported and participated in creating, preserving, and cultivating a culture of rich history through the arts here at our center.

Last week, the San Diego Community Power team had the pleasure of celebrating the completion of a new solar and storage project at the?Sherman Heights Community Center. The project was led by the?Hammond Climate Solutions Foundation, one of the recipients of our Community Clean Energy Grant in 2023, and is a testament to what we can accomplish when we all work together toward a #CleanEnergyFuture.

Felicidades Daniela Kelly, Francisco, Vero, and the entire Sherman Heights Community Center’s board on 40 years of service to the Sherman and historic barrios community AND the 30th anniversary of the center's opening. So, much innovation and impact to celebrate! We were able learn more about SHCC as the first generation of grantees for San Diego Foundation's El Camino Fund that is launching the Center’s Cocina Program to empower culinary entrepreneurship through a small business incubator course for home cooks and working-class food entrepreneurs. Reach out to them to cater your next event! The cafe de olla and agua de plantano (I know right?!) was on point. We were also able to witness the ribbon cutting for the solar project that will advance sustainability within the community with significant savings over time and advance clean energy where it is needed the most. I wish every Friday was like today. Sandy Valdivia and I had a chance to see so many folks and just feel at home. We are proud to be partners and collaborators!

It was a pleasure to host the Climate Funders Collaborative at the Sherman Heights Community Center and share the rich history of our organization. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary since opening our doors, we are reflecting on our past and are inspired to build a more sustainable future for our communities.
