This morning, two of our former detention officers took their oaths of office as commissioned deputies at the Clay County Sheriff's Office. Undersheriff Self presented them with their badges. Deputies Hacker and Schultz graduated from the Missouri Sheriffs' Association Academy last week at the Platte County Missouri Sheriff's Office. We're so excited for the next step in their journey. We are once again hiring detention officers with a police academy sponsorship track. Detention officers who demonstrate dedication and leadership will be chosen through a selection process to attend the academy with tuition paid while receiving their regular detention officers' salary. Amid the devastation and chaos from the tragic house explosion caused by a propane leak outside Excelsior Springs on Aug. 23, it's easy to overlook the people who coordinated the entire, large-scale response because they're behind the scenes. The first responder vehicles you see on the right side of this picture are only there because of dispatchers. During the course of this incident, our dispatchers took multiple calls from neighbors about the explosion while trying to relay that information to deputies and fire departments. They coordinated the response of our deputies and detectives, a significant number of fire departments, Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office, Missouri Search and Rescue K9s, the medical examiner and outside agencies offering assistance, like the Red Cross and ATF. They continued to take calls from neighbors whose homes had been damaged in the blast or who had found personal effects of the victims and relayed that to deputies on scene. The explosion last Friday was like nothing anyone currently working at our Sheriff's Office has ever seen. Fortunately, our amazing dispatchers are capable and ready to handle whatever comes their way, and they demonstrated that during this tragedy.
