Last night, we kicked off the holiday season with our 2nd annual Grand Illumination Ceremony, spreading light and joy to our patients, caregivers, visitors, volunteers, donors, and team members. This beautiful display of lights in our therapeutic Bridge Garden is a symbol of our gratitude for the incredible clinicians & caregivers who provide exceptional physical rehab care at our hospital and outpatient centers. The 2,000 multi-colored lights around the arch represent patients and team members who were honored throughout the year with a donation to Sheltering Arms Foundation. We invite everyone to visit and enjoy the glow—these lights will shine brightly throughout the holiday season as a reminder of the strength & spirit of our community. Theo Karavolas moved to Richmond in June 2022 and set his sights on completing the Richmond City Marathon on November 16th. He immersed himself in the local running community and this past summer he ran nearly 400 miles to prepare. Throughout his training, he’s been constantly challenged but feels grateful to have the ability to put one foot in front of another. In 2024, Theo was introduced to Sheltering Arms by Michael Jarvis, a member of the Sheltering Arms Foundation board. Michael shared his passion for Sheltering Arms' mission: to be a national leader in rehabilitation science by providing personalized care in an environment that fosters recovery and restores possibility through collaborative science, research, education, community engagement, and stewardship. During a tour of Sheltering Arms Institute (SAI), Theo witnessed patients pushing themselves to overcome incredible obstacles, summoning every ounce of strength and determination just to take a few steps. Many of these patients were supported by cutting-edge technology, such as body weight support systems and robotic exoskeletons, along with the dedication of therapists and care teams. Inspired by his experience, Theo decided to dedicate his Richmond City Marathon run to supporting the incredible work done every day at Sheltering Arms by patients, their caregivers, and the multidisciplinary care teams.
