Today we want to give a special shoutout to ABC Greater Michigan Chapter's LOGIC group who collected and donated several hundred dollars worth of much-needed items for our clients and families living in shelter! Only TWO more days until submissions are due for the upcoming Survivor Art Exhibit! ?? This exhibit is the first of its kind in the Great Lakes Bay Region, and will bring artwork from survivors of domestic and sexual violence in our communities together to raise up survivor voices and give our community the opportunity to see the impacts these forms of violence have had on our friends and neighbors. You can see their stories and witness healing through their art, and can walk away with a better understanding of not only how these forms of violence impact our neighbors, but also how the community can come together to better support those who need it most! There's still a common misconception that domestic violence & sexual assault are "women's issues," but the reality is that men are survivors too, and are equally deserving of refuge, hope, and healing. Men statistically report abuse less frequently than women and are less likely to seek healing services. There's still a stigma that asking for help is weak, and men often face unique barriers to seeking support after experiencing violence: fear that they will not be believed, a lack of male-specific resources, guilt or shame associated with the trauma they've gone through, etc. Here at Shelterhouse, all survivors are welcome. This week, alongside representatives from other survivor agencies and the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, members of our Shelterhouse team traveled to the Michigan State Capitol to advocate on behalf of local survivors! We're grateful to the House Representatives and Senators that took the time to meet with survivor advocates or accept information about why state and federal funding is critical to support the 100+ domestic and sexual violence agencies operating in the state of Michigan, including Shelterhouse.
