关于我们
Miraka Davies (previously Shelly Davies) is a rockstar business writer, trainer, and keynote speaker. She’s here to remind big companies and government agencies drowning in corporate jargon that plain language will get you better results - every. single. time. She loves nothing more than using her rockstar-level magnetism to: • work a room full of strangers who don’t want to be there (and think they have better places to be) • un-train them from most of what they’ve learned about writing and end up having discussions on empathy, vulnerability, courage, authenticity • and have them leave the room saying it’s the best training they’ve ever done. Because, as it turns out, business writing is more about being courageously transparent than it is about having an impressive vocab or where the fuck to put a semi-colon. Also true for life. When we choose to operate with authenticity, integrity, and courage, both our writing and our lives achieve the outcomes we’re craving. Because it’s never been worth your time to pursue bland, boring, or already been done.

We've released a new course! This one is a must-watch if you want a new way to think about lawyering. And believe me, you do. The scales will fall from your eyes! *Elizabeth de Stadler 🎈takes us on a wild ride* Miraka Davies, Elizabeth, and I rocket through the worlds of: • comic contracts • humour in law • what makes a good contract (hint: it’s not what you’d expect!) • designing and structuring contracts • the mental biases that keep us stuck thinking they have to be long and incomprehensible. The link is in the comments. *Who is Elizabeth de Stadler?* Once a litigation attorney, Elizabeth now refers to herself as a rehabilitated lawyer. She’s a plain language fanatic, a killer of legalese, and her clients say that ‘they pay her to delete things’. Her habit of ‘getting really into things’ has resulted in her writing books on consumer and privacy law. Elizabeth is passionate about educating lawyers and Muggles that legal documents are not special – the same principles of good communication and (un)professional writing apply. #PlainLanguageTraining #LegalWriting #ClearCommunication

It can be hard but it's worth it. Writing well, I mean. It takes discipline to write so it's easy for other people to understand, day after day. But that's what gives you a reputation as a good communicator. And that really matters. Long term, it REALLY matters. 🛑 Stop yourself from sending a garbled message 🕝 Take the time to clarify what you really meant 🖊 Write that instead! Hang in there - the discipline is worth it! #PlainLanguageTraining #ClearWriting #Communication -- Hi, I'm Colleen, gym enthusiast and writing trainer. Normally I say that writing's easy - and it is with the right guidance. But writing well day after day after day takes grit and discipline. Be awesome today!

Gary Bandy just wowed me with numbers. He's our next guest speaker on the The School of unProfessional Writing. I didn't think it was possible for numbers to wow me, but Gary managed it! I shouldn't be surprised - he's written textbooks on writing about numbers. I can't wait to edit this interview. Seriously, do you work in 💲 accounting 📈 statistics 📊 analysis 💰 procurement? This course will take your ability to write about numbers to the next level. Can't wait! My speech-writing process has many phases. It usually starts with thinking on long walks, letting my mind wander over the topic. On those walks, I mentally create the skeleton of my talk - the key things I want the audience to remember. Those key things end up on the left sides of many pieces of paper! Then I work across, scribbling the breakdown of my ideas 💬 the sub points 💬 the stories 💬 the examples I put on Word's Dictate function and riff off the ideas. Somewhere in that mess, I find gems - phrases or sentences that capture an idea. They go word-for-word onto the sheets too. I tend to do both of these things in short bursts, with lots of time in between. The time helps me marinate. 🗯 Why did I think this mattered? 🗯 Why did I think this was a good idea? 🗯 Is it my best idea? Then, when the sheets have too many arrows and re-ordered numbers, I transfer the whole lot into a Word doc. I type the phrases that prompt me to remember the thing I want to say. Important sentences are big and bold. Alongside that, a PowerPoint might develop. I try to only include 💭 things that remind the audience of the skeleton of my talk 💭 things that are quicker to illustrate with an image 💭 instructions for them to follow Then it's practice practice practice, until it feels the right amount of spontaneous and scripted. Bring it on, TechCommNZ! How do you create your speeches? Paying it forward today, working for a better world!
Judging time! This morning I'm judging the Federal Report Card entries for the Center for Plain Language. The goal is to give USA government agencies a #plainlanguage perspective on their public communications. I'm impressed! I'm seeing thoughtful structure, useful headings, and a careful focus on who might read the webpages. I love it when the only suggestions I'm making are about how to go from good to great. Thanks for involving me, Paul Aterman and team! 😊 Image description: Colleen pointing to her computer screens. #citizenAdvocacy #PlainEnglish #PlainLanguageTraining -- Hi, I'm Colleen. I work for a world where everyone understands their rights and responsibilities. Message me if you want plain language training. 😊
