Cooper Elementary School has a new, artistic addition! The Sheboygan Viewfinder project includes two custom manhole covers, called viewfinders, placed at sites where a culverted stream flows. These viewfinders replace old stormwater manhole covers, allowing people to see and hear the underground stream. And one location is at our very own Cooper Elementary School! Artist Ginger Brooks Takahashi developed this project during her 2023 residency at the Kohler Arts/Industry Foundry. She worked with the City of Sheboygan Department of Public Works and Cooper, with help from Kohler Foundry associates. The viewfinder design is inspired by the openings in lotus seed heads, which grow in local waterways, as well as ancient Japanese sword protectors. Red Raider Manufacturing (RRM) is a program within both North and South High Schools. It has been designed and aligned to develop the essential skills needed by today’s manufacturing employers! Students can learn and actively ready themselves for the high-tech, high-skill, and high-pay manufacturing jobs we have right in our community. Our partnership with Lakeland University has enabled us to offer dual-credit college enrollment for students, resulting in FREE college courses for high school students. ?? The percentage of students taking dual-credit courses has increased to 71% among all students and 92% among college-bound students!

Last week, the Sheboygan Area School District marked the first full-day professional development day for staff, made possible by the new calendar that removed early release Wednesdays. This adjustment allows staff to engage in more comprehensive training sessions throughout the year. The focus of today's training was on fostering a culture of collaboration to enhance learning for all students!

Last month, the Sheboygan Area School District broke ground on the 27th home that will be designed and built by students from North and South High Schools. In three short weeks, the foundation is poured and students are hard at work framing up the house. South High School senior Katelyn Nettekoven designed the house that will be built.?Her design was selected last spring from the plans drawn by all students enrolled in our Project Lead the Way Civil Engineering and Architecture class. This is the ninth home built under the direction of instructor and project manager Ted Schermetzler and the fourth student-built home in the Stonebrook Crossing subdivision by Werner Homes.
