At She Should Run, we’re all excited about exercising our right to vote this year. But the big question we’ve been asking ourselves is, how can we continue our civic engagement beyond voting? We’ve included tons of tools like a ballot evaluator, a guide to absentee voting, and information on how you can practice your civic duty, plus tips and activities to help you bring your community along for the ride. Since our VOTE, AND campaign launched two and a half weeks ago, we’ve seen more than 400 women pledge to consider running for office! For us, that’s what it’s all about: inspiring women to envision themselves in public leadership roles. But to keep doing this critical work, we need support from people like you. A New Vote Mama Foundation report just dropped, and it found that there are NO state legislatures that have achieved proportional representation for mothers of minor kids. Here are top findings: ?? Moms of minor kids comprise just 7.9% of state legislators, which means they are represented in state legislatures at less than half the rate they appear in the general population ?? Mothers of children under the age of 6 are especially underrepresented and comprise only 1.7% of all state legislators ?? Only 2.3% of all state legislators are moms of color with kids under 18 ?? Only 0.5% of all state legislators are LGBTQ+ moms of minor kids These statistics highlight the significant gap in representation for mothers in political offices, pointing to the need for a closer examination of the structures that impact their participation. Vote Mama Foundation’s work aims to identify these barriers and promote a more inclusive political landscape.
