In an article that Harvard Business Review released by Roger Jones, "What CEOs Are Afraid Of", the top five fears that (not just female) CEOs have are (in descending order): 1. Incompetence (and the crux of imposterism) 2. Underachieving (can lead to bad risk taking, leading those to overcompensate) 3. Appearing Too Vulnerable (can lead to lack of honesty and vulnerability when making important business choices) 4. Being politically attacked by others in their community (leading to mistrust and overcautiousness) 5. Appearing foolish (limits abilities to speak up or have honest conversations) The first two fears are performance based ("Do I have what it takes?"), while the remaining three are perception based ("What will people think of me?"). These insecurities felt by both men and women, reveal that people in general question their own leadership abilities and as a result can feel powerless, mistrust others, refuse to show vulnerability and honesty, make bad decisions, avoid confrontation and responsibility and end up undermining relationships. When leaders are fear-based, it drives poor behavior, toxic culture and work environments and ultimately can lead to sabotaging those leaders ability to lead effectively. And guess what: the questions and fears that drive leaders are identity questions. I've been doing research around these topics for years, mainly because, Taylor said it best: it's me. I'm the problem, it's me. I have been this leader, employee, founder and person. I saw that I was reacting to others out of my insecurities and was constantly questioning my abilities, my performance and that CONSTANT second-guessing left me feeling inadequate, insecure and always worried what people thought of me. And honestly, I thought it was just me who felt that way, until I started talking to others vulnerably and realized that both men and women were identifying with some of the same issues I was working on in and out of the office. So with that, I'm so excited to share that I'll be doing a workshop on addressing our top fears and have very practical applications on how to overcome these obstacles and grow - no matter where you are. This is not about a vision cast, this is about discarding the old and embracing the new in an effort to grow in courage, trust, power and a wealth mindset. Did you know that 87% of people polled in 2023 by LiveCareer said they suffer from work-related fears? Eighty-one percent say those fears and phobias have affected their job in various negative ways and 80% believe that fears are something to be ashamed of. The most common work fears include: 1. Making decisions 2. Taking responsibility 3. Public speaking 4. Getting Fired 5. Making a mistake Fear-based leadership (which according to this study is one in every three leaders) leads to a loss of $36B in the U.S. Additionally, fear-based leadership impacts employees through anxiety, the imposter syndrome, lack of balance, and leads to “quiet quitting,” among many other issues. It’s TEN days away! The She Overcomes Masquerade Ball is happening on March 23 at the Radisson BLU in downtown Fargo. I believe many women (75% according to Forbes) struggle with mindsets that keep them small, unseen and unheard.
