30 Days, 30 Women: Celebrating Women’s Impact Through Art & Storytelling ??? ?? Today, Amanda Jeffs brings us 'Kate Sheppard: a legacy that walks with us'. Kate Sheppard led the movement that made New Zealand the first self-governing country to grant women the right to vote in 1893. She and her fellow suffragists gathered nearly 32,000 signatures, presenting a 270-meter-long petition that changed history. These images reimagine Kate Sheppard as a modern political leader, dressed in power suits and gracing the cover of Time magazine as a 21st-century icon. While her impact in the 19th century was groundbreaking, it's interesting to imagine her navigating today’s political landscape; shaping policy, driving global conversations on gender equality, and continuing to challenge the status quo. What influence would she have in our era? Born in Liverpool in 1847, Kate migrated to Christchurch in her twenties, where she became the most prominent voice in New Zealand’s women’s suffrage movement. She joined the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in 1885, advocating not just for voting rights but for broader freedoms, stating: "We are tired of having a ‘sphere’ doled out to us and of being told that anything outside that sphere is ‘unwomanly.’" Her influence extended beyond New Zealand. She became the inaugural president of the National Council of Women in 1896, edited The White Ribbon; the first newspaper in New Zealand owned, managed, and published solely by women, and was later elected honorary vice-president of the International Council of Women. She campaigned globally for women’s rights, from contraception access to freedom from restrictive fashion. She lived to see the first woman MP, Elizabeth McCombs, enter Parliament in 1933. She passed away a year later, having outlived two husbands, her only son, and her only grandchild. Kate Sheppard’s legacy lives in every woman who dares to lead, every vote cast, and every movement for equality. Her impact still resonates now, in every modern women who gets the chance to vote and have freedom; reminding us that progress is not just something we do once and forget or just remember; it’s a legacy we carry for future generations. Through this series “Roots of Resilience: Leyla in Bloom,”Jennifer sought to create not just a visual homage to Leyla Qasim but a dynamic interplay between history, identity, and the soft, persistent power of nature. Leyla Qasim, a Kurdish activist who became a symbol of resistance and sacrifice, was executed at the age of 22 for her unwavering dedication to her people and her ideals. Her legacy, often carried in the hearts of Kurds as a martyr and a beacon of strength, served as the heartbeat of this work, a reminder that resilience is often most profound when it blooms against the harshest elements. Each image holds a dialogue between past and present, reality and myth. The wildflowers, barbed wire, and butterflies are not mere symbols but participants in this story, each petal and thorn a reminder of the beautiful and the brutal that so often coexist in Kurdish narratives. Barbed wire intertwines with blooms, a visual reminder that transformation is often most profound where it resists. Through this series, I aimed to bridge the stoic strength of Leyla with a dreamlike, almost surreal softness. The juxtaposition of natural motifs against the quiet strength in her gaze creates a visual poetry that speaks to the quiet rebellions that live within us all. The series is both a tribute and a whisper, an invitation to witness the quiet strength of standing tall amid the storm. “Roots of Resilience: Leyla in Bloom” is ultimately about more than resistance; it is about reclamation. It is about finding tenderness in the thorns and seeing hope rise where it was not expected. It is a love letter to my own Kurdish heritage, to all who endure, and to the delicate art of blooming despite. Georgia O’Keeffe Georgia O’Keeffe did not just paint what she saw; she painted what she felt. Through color, form, and abstraction, she created a world that was deeply personal yet universally evocative. Her work was about seeing beyond the surface, magnifying, simplifying, and transforming reality into something more essential, more alive. In this piece, I wanted to reflect that transformation. Colors bleed into one another, forms shift and evolve, mirroring how she used painting as a way to express movement, emotion, and sensuality. Her shapes were never rigid, they expanded, pulsed, and breathed, just like the natural world she was so deeply connected to. Her art was unmistakably feminine, not because of subject matter, but because of how she embraced fluidity, softness, and strength in equal measure. Whether through deep blues that radiate calm, or bold reds and yellows that vibrate with energy, her use of color was an emotional force of its own. What inspires me most about O’Keeffe is her ability to make us feel through form and color alone. Her legacy is more than her paintings; it is a way of seeing, a way of feeling, a way of being unapologetically bold in one’s own artistic expression.
