Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the strength, resilience, and rich cultural heritage of Indigenous communities. While there is tremendous diversity among Native communities in the U.S., many share deep connections to the land, the wisdom of Elders, strong family bonds, and meaningful traditions that have been passed down through generations. Unfortunately, due to the impact of historical and intergenerational trauma, Indigenous communities also face higher rates of PTSD, addiction, and suicide compared to the general U.S. population. This trauma, often carried from generation to generation, continues to affect the mental health and well-being of individuals and families. Today and every day, let’s listen, learn, and support Indigenous communities in their healing journey. Do you know where the food comes from in your child's cafeteria? If you live in one of the growing number of school districts around Kansas City that are purchasing from The Kansas City Food Hub, there's a good chance that food is coming from local farms. The hamburger you see in this picture, and 2,000 others, were served up in Shawnee Mission School District high schools and middle schools last Thursday - the beef, lettuce, onion, and tomato all sourced locally. The results are in, the kids prefer the burger over every other lunch item. Purchases like this are made possible in part by the USDA's Local Food for Schools cooperative agreement program which just received a $1.7 billion shot in the arm!
