Congratulations to UCLA on the Nimoy Theater being named the Best Cultural/Worship project in the 2024 ENR California Best Projects Awards. This #ShawmutBuilt transformation revitalized the historic Crest Theatre into a state-of-the-art venue for the arts, seamlessly integrating sustainability, historic preservation, and community engagement. In partnership with BAR Architects & Interiors, the renovation honored the theater’s legacy by restoring iconic elements such as the 230-foot-long mural, while introducing modern features like flexible seating configurations and advanced audiovisual systems. We’re #ShawmutProud to share that Derek Dandurand, Director of Historic Preservation for our New York Metro region, has been named to Building Design + Construction’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2024—a prestigious national recognition celebrating his outstanding contributions to the industry. With more than a decade of experience, Derek has been instrumental in preserving New York City’s cultural heritage, overseeing restoration efforts at 23 landmark sites and leading initiatives that seamlessly blend historic preservation with modern needs. Among his many achievements, the ongoing #ShawmutBuilt restoration of the 120-year-old Aguilar Branch of the New York Public Library stands out as a career-defining project. Last week, we celebrated an exciting milestone at Boynton Yards in Somerville, MA: the completion of 808 Windsor Street, the second #ShawmutBuilt ground-up, purpose-built lab building in this transformative development. This 11-story, 370,000-square-foot state-of-the-art R&D lab and office building features spec suites up to 19,000 square feet, ground-floor retail, and a suite of modern amenities—including below-grade parking, a bike storage room, a gym with locker facilities, and multiple collaboration spaces—all designed to foster innovation and community. Paired with the newly opened Boynton Yards Park, a half-acre civic space located between 101 South Street and 808 Windsor, featuring a central lawn, splash pad, and native planting beds, this evolving hub is bringing vitality to the neighborhood, creating a welcoming space for residents, visitors, and the local community. Yesterday in Norwood, MA, we joined Hobbs Brook Real Estate to celebrate the topping off of FM's new world-class R&D center. This 320,000-square-foot #ShawmutBuilt facility will serve as the cornerstone for next-generation research, uniting advanced laboratories, corporate offices, and FM Approvals operations in a cutting-edge, sustainable environment. Alongside members from PAYETTE, trade partners, and local officials, we watched as the final beam was placed on the structure—constructed from 3,500 tons of steel and comprising 4,585 individual pieces. This milestone represents significant progress toward the 2026 completion of the facility designed to set new benchmarks in resilience and innovation, reflecting FM’s commitment to excellence in research and learning. Congratulations to the 843 N Spring Street project team for winning an award of merit in the Engineering News-Record California Best Project Awards. One of the first major cross-laminated timber office buildings in Los Angeles, this new #ShawmutBuilt building embraces biophilic and low carbon design with its use of mass timber, tiered vertical garden, open-air circulation spaces, and the adaptive reuse of the former two-story building. Prefabrication is central to our team’s innovative approach at FM's new #ShawmutBuilt facility in Norwood, MA—a state-of-the-art, 320,000-square-foot complex designed for next-generation research and development. An example of this approach is the building’s mechanical systems: through more than 70 precisely coordinated crane picks, our team is installing prefabricated air handling units, electrical conduit, geothermal piping, and other essential components that support the facility’s advanced research capabilities. This controlled process ensures rigorous quality assurance, minimizes rework, and reduces material waste, resulting in a faster, safer, and more predictable build with minimal onsite disruptions. This process reflects the meticulous preplanning and collaboration of our team and subcontractor partners—including TG Gallagher, Worcester Air, Bosco Crane, and Gaston Electrical—whose expertise has been instrumental in executing the installation.
