Today is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. We’re taking this time to recognize those who become members of a club they never asked to join. It’s a club with never-ending membership fees that come in the form of anger, sadness, confusion, guilt – a complex type of grief understood only by those who know it firsthand. We call them survivors because when you lose someone to suicide, your experience and the grief that follows increases your own risk of suicide. Those “left behind” are surviving, day after day, in the wake of this complicated death. Our founders, Kim Mead-Walters, M.D., and Davis Walters, are members of this club. When their 16-year-old son, Jeremy, died by suicide in 2016, they discovered quickly that the Cape lacked resources for their family and Jeremy’s friends who were grieving – and they were in desperate need of support. The Suicide Awareness Walk, and ultimately, our nonprofit, were created so that survivors on the Cape & Islands know they are not alone in their grief. No one should have to experience suicide loss. But for those who do, connecting with other survivors can facilitate healing. Our free peer grief support groups offer a source of hope for those who have lost someone close to them, and we’re honored to play a small role in their grief journeys. ???? #SurvivorDay #SuicideLossSurvivor #SharingKindness #CapeCod #StartTheConversation

Children are often referred to as the "forgotten grievers." There are many misconceptions about children and grief: that they are resilient, and therefore, don't need support after a death loss; that if they aren't talking about the loss, then they're not thinking about it; or that they don't experience grief because they're too young to understand what happened. The truth is that children have a wide range of responses after someone they love dies, but these might appear different from what their adult caregivers expect. Children will understand a loss differently as they grow, and as a result, may grieve the same loss multiple times. Most importantly, there is no "right" or "wrong" way for a child to grieve at any age, and just like adults, young grievers need a safe, caring environment where they're free to express their emotions. For more information on children's grief, see this article from the Mayo Clinic: https://lnkd.in/eyvG7fx7 #ChildrensGriefAwarenessDay

It’s not too late to sign up for our Drumming for Grief session this Saturday at 11 AM in South Harwich, led by Sue Landers, LICSW, a member of Drumma Queens of Cape Cod. Register today: https://lnkd.in/ekUsmNwW Why drumming? Often, we don’t have the words to describe our emotions. Drumming offers greater freedom for describing these complex sensations than through language, helping to release trapped feelings— which is especially beneficial for those grieving a death loss.?? ?? ?? #DrummingForGrief #GriefSupport #SharingKindness #HarwichMA #CapeCod
