We are proud to announce that California’s Clean Mobility Options (CMO) program just awarded $33 million in new funds for mobility projects for electric vehicle carsharing, electric bike-sharing, electric school buses and more.? ?? CMO addresses two major problems in California: Air pollution and the lack of clean transportation options for low-income or disadvantaged communities. This announcement brings the state’s total investments in these communities through CMO to more than $66+ million.? ?? With this latest award window, CMO’s Mobility Project Voucher (MPV) gives 17 communities the funding and project support needed to launch a clean, shared mobility project to address their unique transportation challenges including:? -On-demand shuttles, vans, and buses? -Traditional fixed route transit services – like school buses? -Bikesharing and scooter-sharing? -Carpooling and vanpooling? -Electric carsharing? -On-demand rideshare services – similar to those provided by Uber or Lyft? ? In its first funding window, CMO awarded MPVs to 20 California nonprofits, public agencies, and tribal governments. Since then, 17 awardees have launched their projects. Powered by EVs, this first-of-its-kind service will provide on-demand and scheduled rides, helping to bridge mobility gaps and create new opportunities for local communities and small businesses. Throughout history, Black communities have led the fight for environmental justice, advocating for clean air, safe neighborhoods, and equitable access to transportation. Yet, environmental inequities persist, and continue to create devastating health impacts for Black Americans. Addressing these disparities requires action. Through initiatives like the Clean Mobility Options Program supported by California Air Resources Board, California Climate Investments, and California Energy Commission, SUMC and CALSTART are working alongside Black-led organizations to bring clean, accessible transportation solutions to communities that need them most—from the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce’s work expanding zero-emission mobility options to SankofaCity Leimert Park’s innovative zero-cost shuttle and e-bike program with Circuit in South Los Angeles. #TeamCTA celebrates Black History Month!? ? Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was Chicago’s first non-Native settler. DuSable came from a family of French & African roots. He originally settled in New Orleans but eventually made his way to present-day Chicago by 1778. DuSable’s legacy was rich in multiculturalism and innovation which left a permanent stamp on the Chicago area. On June 25, 2021, the Chicago City Council approved a compromise ordinance renaming the outer portion of Lake Shore Drive to ‘Jean Baptiste Point du Sable Lake Shore Drive’, making it the first roadway named after a settler in Chicago.?? ? ?? Changing Global Narratives on Two- and Three-Wheelers ?? There are at least half a billion motorized two- and three-wheelers (2&3Ws) worldwide, and their impact is undeniable. From tuk-tuks to motorcycles and scooters, these vehicles are the backbone of mobility in many cities and towns across the Global South. They provide affordable, accessible, and efficient transport for millions—especially lower-income households—while supporting livelihoods, local economies, and sustainable mobility through electrification. Yet, narratives about 2&3Ws in media often focus on safety concerns, crime, and regulation challenges, overshadowing their critical contributions. A recent media scan by students at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, in partnership with GNPT, found that only 38% of stories about two- and three-wheelers portray them positively, while 42% highlight challenges. To reshape these perceptions, the Global Network for Popular Transportation (GNPT) is excited to launch a new explainer series! Andrea San Gil León (she/her) was the project and editorial lead and project manager, with assistance from Camila Barquero and Christian Bernstein. Aneerudha Paul, Alex Mohan, Shreya Baoni and Kshitija Akre were the research consultants, analysts, and writers. GNPT and SUMC are grateful to Uber, who made the creation of this explainer possible, particularly for the guidance and input of Harrison Peck and Shin-pei Tsay. These explainers highlight the value of 2&3Ws, covering key themes like: ? Electrification – 2&3Ws are leading the transition to sustainable mobility, already displacing nearly four times more oil than all four-wheel passenger EVs combined. ? Equity & Inclusion – These vehicles bridge mobility gaps, connecting underserved communities to jobs, education, and healthcare. ? Road Safety – Policy, infrastructure, and regulation are essential to making roads safer for drivers and passengers. ? Safety & Security – Understanding perceptions vs. realities and how to improve conditions for operators and riders. ? Economics – 2&3Ws drive local economies, provide employment, and fuel commerce in the Global South. ?? It’s time for a more informed discussion. For #TransitEquityDay, we asked: Have you seen good examples/solutions of transportation systems that truly serve the needs of women and caregivers? We heard a variety of responses, from reducing costs to focusing on prioritizing women's voices in the decision making process. Alongside these solutions, the design of transportation systems themselves is a critical means of meeting the mobility needs of women and caregivers. Challenging traditional transit systems built around the 9-5 commute, our project "A Design Framework: Mobility Hubs for Women & Caregivers" looks into how mobility hub design can support the unique travel patterns of women. On March 6th, our research team, from SUMC (USA) and Living Cities and Communities (Sweden), will present key findings and share an open-source presentation tool to inspire change and make transit more inclusive.
