Do you like eating DANDELIONS like I do? Then let's get in the WEEDS! Policy weeds that is - the Medicaid Food Security Network (led by Share Our Strength and HealthBegins) is holding our first National Summit May 7-8 in DC on "Policy strategies for Medicaid and MCOs to improve SNAP, WIC, & Food is Medicine coordination". This is an opportunity for our community to share insights, foster meaningful connections with each other and our fancy speakers, and explore new ideas to address food security within Medicaid. Medicaid and SNAP cuts loom large and scarily, but there IS a path forward to continue building on the Food is Medicine/food security coalition-building, policymaking, and service delivery so many of us have been in the thick of. Who should attend? Food security advocates, healthcare representatives, managed care organizations, state government staff, state legislators, and allies. And if you’re already going to the Food Research & Action Center Anti-Hunger Policy Conference on May 4-6, this could be a great extension of your DC trip, as the MFSN summit will be in the same hotel, the Omni Shoreham. There is no registration fee, but there is limited space, so register by April 4 and help spread the word to your networks.?JOIN ME!!! #Medicaid #FoodSecurity #HealthEquity #Networking #FoodInsecurity #HealthBegins #ShareOurStrength #FoodIsMedicine #SDOH #HRSN

"SNAP is one of the most effective tools we have as a nation to address childhood hunger," Sarah Steely, director of No Kid Hungry Virginia. "It provides families with that extra help to put food on the table so that kids can have access to consistent nutrition all year round, especially filling the void during school breaks." Did you know that 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ high school students experience hunger due to food insecurity? School meals are a reliable food source for millions of students in the U.S., but many youths miss school because they feel unsafe or uncomfortable. This LGBTQIA+ Health Awareness Week, we're reflecting on our landscape analysis of food insecurity among LGBTQIA+ youth from 2023 that we conducted in partnership with The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, a leader in LGBTQIA+ research. On Friday, I joined Ayana Harry on NY1 News's #InsideCityHall to discuss Share Our Strength's latest #NoKidHungry poll of New Yorkers. New Yorkers are struggling - more than half are going into debt in order to pay for groceries and a majority of respondents said in addition to their financial health, rising prices are impacting their physical and mental health. New Yorkers are also united - they want to protect and strengthen safety net programs like #SNAP, #WIC, #summermeals and #schoolmeals which are under attack at the federal level. Almost all respondents said hunger should NOT exist in New York. Several years ago, a sitting member of the US Senate used the term "New York values" in a derogatory manner. I proudly wear the badge of having "New York Values" each day because it means we welcome people, we support others, we care for our neighbors and want to see them grow and thrive. We take the politics out of issues and focus on caring for our fellow New Yorkers. That's how we need our elected officials to address child hunger - with New York values of love, respect and concern. Learn more in this extended interview: https://lnkd.in/egJPhPqQ
