I am still processing my experience last week at the New York State Assembly and Senate Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force's annual SOMOS, Inc. (fka Somos el Futuro, Inc.) Conference. During my time in San Juan, I had the privilege to visit with my friends and partners, Mari Jo Laborde and Gabriela Colón at Banco de Alimentos Puerto Rico. I continue to be in awe of the work they’re leading across the island – supporting communities through natural disasters and looking for sustainable solutions to growing produce to bringing support in the summer months to some of the hardest to reach communities in rural areas. I have learned so much from their leadership and dedication – Share Our Strength is lucky to partner as we work to connect even more kids and families with meals. SOMOS provided needed community for government officials, nonprofits, corporations, advocates, unions and other supporters from New York to come together with a singular goal – supporting communities across New York City, New York State, Puerto Rico and the entire country. I’m grateful to Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz and Assemblyman Jon Rivera for inviting me to speak on a panel titled ““Growing Solutions: #UrbanAgriculture, #FoodSecurity and Sustainable Futures” with esteemed colleagues Manuela Zamora, Costa Constantinides, Jeanette Estima and Lakisha Morris. The theme heard throughout the panel (and really the entire conference) was the importance of partnership especially in unprecedented times. I spent time with elected officials (including Senator-Elect Siela Bynoe, from my hometown of Westbury!), government partners and colleagues including Wayne Ho, Sharon Levy, Grace C. Bonilla, Esq. Diana Caba, Tristan A. Massalay-Ellis and Chelsea Baytemur, MSW leading incredible work on #youthdevelopment, #immigrantservices, #housing, #economicdevelopment, #foodinsecurity, #childcare, #safety and so many more areas. I need to take more photos - the conference was filled with friends and mentors who inspire and challenge me each and every day. I left with an energy and a renewed sense of purpose as we continue to protect the most vulnerable and strengthen communities - and especially the 1 in 5 children in NYS that could face #hunger this year.?Thank you to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico for sharing your magic with me...

I turned 3 today, 3 years since joining Share Our Strength to build a national initiative focused on the root causes of hunger. Starting this job, I was definitely timid, even intimidated by the task ahead … as I look back on the 3 years and the work, I am so motivated by our collective impact goal to improve economic mobility for 3 million single mothers and their children by 2030. My colleagues get the crown for our progress to date, especially grateful for Courtney Smith for celebrating this milestone and sending me these flowers. ??
