It is with great pleasure that #ShareOurSpare welcomes?Eva Giglio?as our new Board Chair. Eva first became connected with SOS during Covid when she was the Deputy Chief of Staff in Chicago Public Schools. In that role, we worked in partnership to distribute diapers at CPS' meal distribution sites to promote equity of access to essential items during a time of immense need and uncertainty. Eva joined the Board in 2021 and has been a champion of the organization ever since. In her role as Executive Director of CME Group Foundation, Eva has helped SOS develop a diversified funding strategy and connect us to more partners across our community. Eva noted: “Share Our Spare has a mission that is a no brainer to get behind. If we want to support economic opportunities for families, it starts with making sure they have the essential items they need for their children. As a mom of three, I know that I cannot focus on anything else if my kids are not taken care of first. We need to make sure that is not a luxury, but a right for all parents.” At SOS, it is our mission to meet the essential needs of the children in our community?so that children can thrive and parents can shift from crisis to caregiving with dignity. A day in the life of a donated item... ??Fun Fact Alert: Share Our Spare is the largest provider of early childhood essential items in Chicago and we do this by recirculating hundreds of thousands of YOUR items through our agency partner ‘shopping’ days. #DidYouKnow that each item donated to the Sharehouse is quality checked, cleaned and inventoried by one of our staff or volunteers? We do this to ensure the children we serve receive high quality and clean toys, clothes, strollers, bassinets and more. This is also incredibly time consuming. So, next time you are organizing items to bring by, do a quick clean and check so that we can get your beloved items out to families faster! We are so grateful for the work that The Honeycomb Project does at our warehouse. Every single month they bring in families to sort clothes, toys and other essentials items. Last year, with the support of our in-kind donors and agency partners, #ShareOurSpare distributed 323,772 pieces of clothing, gear, & other essentials to families with young children who are experiencing poverty. All of these items are equal to 16.8 tons of quality supplies that were able to be recirculated from families who no longer needed them to families who do. The cornerstones of what we do at SOS are equity & sustainability.
