Earlier this week, Bill Laprade captivated a full house at the AEG Nisqually Chapter meeting, reflecting on his 50+ years as an engineering geologist at Shannon & Wilson. Bill shared highlights from his remarkable career, which spanned the globe from South America to Taiwan to both coasts of the U.S., and included a diverse range of projects, from high bridges, forestry, and utilities to landslides and glacial geology. His development of geologically oriented profiles revolutionized the presentation of subsurface conditions in our profession. Thank you, Bill, for your contributions to our field! #ShannonWilsonSeattle

Next up in the United States Permafrost Association's Technical Training Webinar Series: Shannon & Wilson's Oliver Hoopes will discuss the design and performance of the Lost Creek Thermal Improvements Project, which addressed slope movement and landslide risk at a site along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Additional background and registration information can be found here: https://ow.ly/wK0C50U5ILU The pipeline at Lost Creek traverses a north facing slope with discontinuous, warm permafrost underlain by a frozen peat bog. This peat layer contains a shear zone that moves as the permafrost degrades, causing the pipeline’s vertical support members to tilt, which required expensive maintenance. The seminar will describe how Shannon & Wilson designed and installed a system of vertical passive thermosyphons (FSHPs) and woodchip surface insulation to cool the permafrost and mitigate these risks. The seminar will highlight the project's use of 3D finite element thermal modeling to optimize the design of the FSHPs and insulation layout. Oliver will also present the performance of the system to date and how that compares to the model predictions. #ShannonWilsonSeattle #Permafrost #ArcticEngineering

Congratulations to Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety and City of Boulder OSMP for announcing the start of the Marshall Mesa Coal Fire Mitigation Project and Marshall Mesa Trailhead Project. ? The Marshall Mesa Coal Fire, which has been burning for more than a century, is located under the Marshall Mesa Trailhead. #ShannonWilsonDenver is proudly assisting CDRMS with mitigating the subsurface mine fire. Our services include providing construction observation and testing for approximately 72,000 cubic yards of earthwork required for the project. ? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gTiqS-qa
The Marshall Coal Fire Mitigation project is underway in south Boulder County. The project will mitigate subsurface coal fires in and around the Marshall Mesa Trailhead by excavating the hot smouldering coal and blending it with cold rock and soil. The project will involve excavation of approximately 182,000 cubic yards of material. The cold blended material will then be used to backfill and restore the affected areas. Following the coal fire mitigation the City of Boulder OSMP will redevelop the trailhead facilities. The Marshall Mesa Trailhead is expected to reopen in the autumn of 2025.
