We’re excited to share some highlights from last week, where fellows had the chance to connect with keynote speaker Angela Davis, engage in workshops and panel discussions with leaders in the arts, journalism, and sustainability, and participate in site visits to Loko I?a Pā?aiau, Pearl Harbor, and ?Iolani Palace. The inaugural 2024-2025 Equitable Futures Fellowship (EFF) is off to an amazing first week in Honolulu with sessions hosted between Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design and the East-West Center campuses! This week, we had the incredible honor of hosting Angela Davis as our keynote speaker for the Equitable Futures Fellowship. The conversation was moderated by Nahed Minawi, Events and Partnerships Manager at?Shangri La. Angela Davis is an American political activist, scholar, and author known for her work in civil rights, prison reform, and social justice. During her keynote, Davis shared reflections on her pursuits for global justice and instilled hopes for the future as fellows continue their journey. The Equitable Futures Fellowship is a partnership between the Doris Duke Foundation and the East-West Center, empowering diverse leaders from across sectors to tackle inequity in all its forms, from income and health care disparities to the impacts of the climate crisis. It was a joy to open up our campus to serve as a place for connection, storytelling, and inspiration. We are thrilled to announce the inaugural cohort of the Equitable Futures Fellowship, a groundbreaking program created in partnership between the Doris Duke Foundation and the East-West Center! These 16 exceptional leaders, selected for their commitment to equity, sustainability, and creativity, will collaborate to address some of the world's most pressing challenges from wealth disparities to impacts of the climate crisis. ? In response to global imbalances of wealth, access, and power, the Equitable Futures Fellowship is reimagining leadership by empowering diverse voices across government, communities, advocacy, media, technology, the arts, and entrepreneurship. Fellows will explore innovative approaches to tackle inequities in income, health care, education, and societal pluralism, while developing the skills to reshape governance and drive transformative change. ? Through in-person sessions in Hawai‘i and Aotearoa (New Zealand), as well as virtual meetings, fellows will build lasting networks and leadership capacities to create more just, resilient communities worldwide. ? We are doing more at Shangri La to build community together outside of our grounds to maximize Doris Duke Foundation's resources and impact in Hawai’i. We are grateful for our local partners like Capitol Modern (formerly Hawaii State Art Museum) where earlier this month we closed out this year's 8x8: Source exhibition with a public showcase to a crowd of nearly 1000 guests.?Since 2020, Shangri La has uplifted 64 local artists through our 8x8 program, featuring 8 visual and 8 performing creatives each year.
