A couple of weeks ago, I was excited to hear that we had a load going up to Alaska. This is a pretty rare destination for us and it’s always cool to watch a shipment move along a less frequently travelled path (in this case we had a truck pick up the crates, put them on a boat and then a second truck did the local delivery in Alaska). I asked the account rep. to please get a picture of the load at the destination; I imagined we were delivering something like a giant piece of mining equipment, which would look awesome photographed against a backdrop of mountains and soaring eagles. But when the delivery happened, I found out we were only delivering a few crates of nuts and bolts. Womp, womp. Sure, we treat all loads like they’re the most important load that day, but to be honest, some of them are more exciting than others. But then I started imagining where these bolts were going – the delivery was for a company that builds bridges. Those bolts are going to be up there in a bridge in Alaska for a hundred years! Think about all of the vehicles and people that are going to pass over the bridge in that time. So many families, opportunities, emergencies, dreams and drudgery are going to go over the bridge before it rusts away and we’ll have to send up another box of bolts. Even if sometimes it’s on the mundane end of things, what we move around on these roads and waterways is the fabric of the country and it’s always cool to be a part of the story!
