A recent article in Education Week highlights that students are eager to learn more about career pathways, yet many high schools don't have the education and programming in place. Empowering students with the skills and knowledge to explore career opportunities will help to ensure their readiness for the future workforce. #schools #career #K12

"There is incredible power in collaborating with our youth." 1. There is a direct link between the use of social media and mental health risk. 2. Parents can play a crucial role in protecting their children's mental health by collaborating with them. 3. There are evidence-based approaches to help parents talk with kids about difficult problems like social media. 4. Listening hard to kids' perspectives is critical and opens the door to shared concern and problem solving. Check out this article in Psychology Today where J. Stuart Ablon, PhD shares evidence-based ideas and resources to help us understand the critical link between protecting kids' mental health and the power of knowing how to talk to our kids about critical issues like social media. https://lnkd.in/eS-2xThi #socialmedia #teenmentalhealth #yourbrainonsocialmedia #teens #parenting #psychology

Kids are back to school and one of the most pressing things teachers and school administrators are thinking about does not lie within the school, but rather is brought into it each day by most if not all of its students. The cellphone. As parents grapple at home with regulating their child's cell phone use, schools are faced with the same challenges.?Texting and scrolling have taken over the classrooms, the halls, and even the playgrounds. Schools are now realizing that this problem?is?up?to them to manage?to?help children learn,?stay focused,?connect?to their?peers and teachers, and?socialize?in healthy ways throughout the school day. While some schools have already begun the work of implementing policies to regulate cellphones in schools, as?David Leonhardt?of?The New York Times?points out, there are still many tough questions to be answered. Earlier this year together with MA Attorney General,?Andrea Joy Campbell?and the?Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, we hosted a convening of representatives from local schools and professionals in the community who work with?youth?to?discuss this very thing. How do we best help our teachers and schools help our students? Closely related is our current work with YourBrainonSocialMedia.org and?J. Stuart Ablon, PhD?and Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital?which centers around the larger issue of kids and social media use and helping parents work together with their children to set boundaries. What Dr. Ablon stresses is the importance of healthy, open and collaborative communication with kids. He teaches parents to first listen to their kids' concerns and then, only after listening first, to respond to their child's concerns with their own concerns in a way that leads to successful conversations and ultimately successful outcomes. The common link to all of these conversations, whether in school or at home, is the kids, and what we know is that they share some of the same concerns. Studies show that teenagers have expressed "deep anxiety concerning their own phone use." As we move towards solutions that work we must continue to keep the lines of communication open so that our kids are a part of the conversations and understand our concerns as trusted adults, and we must keep in mind what Dr. Ablon often says, "Kids do well if they can." https://lnkd.in/eC9Fiisq #socialmedia #k12education #teenmentalhealth #cellphones #teens #kosa

Helping our children navigate social media has as much to do with how we are approaching the conversation as it does what we are saying. It has been a pleasure to partner our work on Your Brain on Social Media with the expertise of J. Stuart Ablon, PhD and Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital to teach parents how to collaborate with their children to navigate these tricky but critical conversations. Last Monday, The Biden-Harris Administration’s Kids Online Health and Safety Task Force, released a new report announcing recommendations and best practices for safe social media use and online activity for kids and teens. https://lnkd.in/eXMixjF2 “We know that while there are some benefits to using this technology, such as building connections and supportive communities, there is also substantial cause for concern, and we want to reduce the potential harms as much as possible so that young people can thrive.” We couldn't agree more and are happy to see this report outlining the risks and dangers and offering parents real solutions to tackle this very important issue. At Your Brain on Social Media, we are committed to being allies in this work, to help parents on this very crucial journey and to provide the resources they need for success. We've partnered with J. Stuart Ablon, PhD, Harvard University and Founder of Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital to help parents talk to their kids about social media, giving them the tools to address their concerns with their children and work together to come up with real solutions that work. We look forward to seeing the continued work that will come out of this Task Force and will continue to come alongside parents and caregivers to protect our children online.
