Thought of the week:?Why this name for the company? The role of a leader can be a lonely one. Gaining quality and honest feedback becomes difficult, and you are often left wondering if you could be more effective. You ultimately have only yourself for many conversations about your own performance. In developing leaders for next or my own succession, I have found the aspect of shadowing highly beneficial. I took a different approach to coaching someone to next. Focusing on empowerment and quietly observing the verbal and non-verbal behaviors of both the leader and their team in real-time, as well as the mentee's critical decision-making skills. I believe acting as a shadow to the mentee emerges as a powerful tool for their personal growth as a leader. If managed by providing coaching that balances honest and constructive feedback from real time issues, a discussion of the choices and decision-making process, and the leader's unique personal style, it can serve as an unlock for a leader seeking to be truly extraordinary. While much growth occurs in the heat of the business, it also often happens in the shadows, when we are away from the actual workplace interactions and when we can evaluate ourselves on our commute, during daily exercise, or even while readying for the day in the bathroom mirror.? But you have only yourself to talk to in these moments. Here is where shadowing creates a real advantage. My goal in this business practice is to be your shadow and provide someone to talk through your challenges, insights, doubts and breakthroughs, not to direct you, but to aid in the self-evaluation that is so critical to continuous and sustainable performance improvement.
